A carrier is a very necessary tool when you own a cat, as it is certain that you will need to travel with your pet over short or long distances; even if you don't plan to make a long journey by plane with your cat, you will still need to take it to the veterinary every once in a while, or the occasion may present itself in which you need to make a road trip with your pet; in any of this or other similar situations, transporting your cat in a carrier will be the safest and more comfortable option for you both.
Nowadays there is a wide variety of cat carriers, from which you will have to choose the option more suited to your needs at the time of making a purchase. In this article the most important types of cat carriers will be described, to help you make a better and quicker selection at the time of buying a carrier.
The most recognized type of cat carrier and the one that comes to mind when thinking of these objects is the hard carrier. These transporters are made of hard plastic, and have a door that can be placed in one of the sides or in the top of the kennel. Some of the advantages of the hard cat carriers are that, being made of hard surfaces and not fabric, they are easy to clean, they also come in the most extensive variety of sizes, and a lot of models are airline approved, which means that you will be able to travel by plane with your cat if you use one of them. On the downside, these carriers occupy a lot of space, as they cannot be folded.
Other type of carrier, and the most versatile one, is the soft cat carrier, which is made out of flexible but resistant synthetic fibers; this type of carrier is ideal when making short trips to the veterinary or to a friend's house, because it is very comfortable for the pet and the owner; of course, you can also find airline approved soft cat carriers, and will be able to travel by plane using this type of transporter. One of the best features of this type of carrier is that you can fold it, so it will occupy nearly no space at all at your home; however, they are more difficult to clean than the hard carriers.
There is a special kind of soft carrier that needs to be addressed, and it's the backpack carrier; it is, as it name states, a backpack that has been modified so that it can contain your pet in a comfortable and safe way; this one is perfect for taking strolls with your cat, while keeping it really close to you, and it's also great if you feel that carrying a hard cat carrier by a handle, or a normal soft model by a shoulder strap is becoming to tiresome for you. Backpack cat carriers guarantee that your pet will always be close to you, while being able to watch the surroundings and being entertained.
If your arms or shoulders get to tired when you carry your cat in a hard, soft or backpack carrier, you might want to get a carrier with wheels; these normally look like a small traveling suitcase, that you pull from a handle, and are perfect for long journeys where you will have to carry your pet at all times. They are very comfortable for your pet, and have openings that allow your cat to explore the world while you serve as the chauffeur for your friend.
There are also wicker and cardboard cat carriers. Wicker carriers are the more environmental friendly alternative to pet transportation, as they are made of natural fibers like willow; they also have a very beautiful organic look, and are much more artistic and unique in their designs than the other carriers made of synthetic fibers; wicker cat carriers are really easy to clean, and though they occupy some space, they can also be used as a resting place for your pet, since they look great on a house (you can normally remove the door), and are very comfortable for the animals. Cardboard carriers are used mainly on the first trip of a kitten to its new house, since they aren't made of resistant materials and should only be used once.
On a closing note, remember that there are compensations and disadvantages to choosing any type of carrier, and that the really important thing is to make a decision that is comfortable and safe for you and your cat.
