When The Ants Go Marching: Easy Tips For Keeping An Ant Problem Under Control

Right at this moment somewhere in the United States, ants are marching from a homeowner’s backyard to the front door, looking for a hospitable place to live. When food and water are of limited supply or when the weather gets rough, ants will come looking for new places to call home. So, how do you keep them out?

Ants are social creatures that live together in communities known as colonies. You’ll often find them gathered near the foundation of a home, under concrete slabs or in other protected areas. The only way to really eliminate the problem is to kill the entire colony. Below are some additional tips from Combat®.

Keeping the Ants Out

– Many ants enter the home via tiny gaps between the wall and utility lines, around windows, and other little holes and cracks around the home. A little caulk around these areas will make a big difference.

– Keep vegetation about one foot away from the home, and avoid placing mulch close to the structure. Ants climb bushes and trees and will make their way from the outside into your home. Mulch is an attractive nesting spot for ants.

– Fix water leaks, and insulate cold pipes and appliances on which condensation develops. The most important thing in an ant’s life is water and they will readily enter your home to get it.

– Don’t over water houseplants. If the tray at the bottom of the plant fills up, empty it out.

– Leave pet food out only at feeding time, and store the food in airtight containers.

Prevention steps are often very effective, but in the event that ants are still entering the home, there are steps that can be taken to eliminate the problem. Sprays are temporarily effective, but getting to the root of the problem requires a long-term solution.

For best results, place Combat® baits or gels in areas where you see or have seen ants. The ants will take the bait and carry it back to the colony and pass it on to other ants, thereby killing the brood, the queen, and the entire colony. There will be noticeably fewer ants in days. All Combat products are guaranteed to work or your money back.

Cool Facts
• Without a queen ant, the colony cannot survive.
• The queen orders directives by emitting odors that tell the ants what to do.
• Ants rely on scent for almost all of their communications.
• An ant can lift 20 times its own body weight, and ants work in teams to lift heavy items.
• The average life expectancy of an ant is 45-60 days; however, a queen will live for several years.
• An ant has two stomachs—one for itself and one to store food to take back to the colony
• There are more than 12,000 species of ants.
• An ant colony contains only female ants.
• The males die shortly after reproduction.
• During the winter, ants can slow their metabolism to survive without eating for months.
• Keep children and pets away from fire ant nests. Fire ants are aggressive can cause serious injury.
• Carpenter ant colonies usually have multiple nests. The main nest is usually located outdoors, even though they’re known for burrowing in structures. They don’t feed on wood, but excavate it to make a nesting site.
• Carpenter ants are nocturnal; they only feed at night.

Tips for taking pictures of stranger dogs

I know, this is a weird title but I felt like I should post about my experiences in taking pictures of dogs on the street. It’s always an awkward thing to do and I’m still getting used to it, but I can’t resist taking pics of fashionable dogs in Toronto and just any dog I find cute.

Here are some tips for taking pics of dogs with strangers:

1) If possible, ask the owner if you can take a picture of the dog instead of just from a distance.  I am still scared sometimes to ask for pictures but I know I look like a total creep. It’s a LOT less creepy to ask and the pictures will turn out 100x better.

2) If a dog is waiting for its owner, maintain a distance. I am normally VERY wary of taking pictures of dogs on their own because the person may see and think you’re trying to steal the dog (it happens a lot!) or you may frighten it and it could bark or bite.

3) Express lots of enthusiasm for the dog and compliment it’s outfit/say how cute it is/how your parents had that breed, etc. Obviously be truthful (if it’s a bulldog, I admit that my mom had a bulldog and loves them) and this will make the person more cooperative in helping you get a shot.

4) I find the dog’s owner is key. Dogs that are strangers won’t normally cooperate with you, so if they are cool with it, ask if the owner can either stand behind you to get the dog’s attention or get the person to hold the dog (to make it more comfortable).

5) I also try NOT to use my flash whenever possible as it may frighten the dog.

6) I will only take around 4 shots MAX because I don’t want to start annoying the person but it’s good to get multiple pics because at least 1 may be good (the rest will probably be crap).

Anyways, I hope this helps and I’ve attached a photo of a bulldog that I actually followed with her owner into The Beer Store along Queens Quay. I couldn’t resist its outfit and underbite! To make this photo better, I should have used a flash (but didn’t want to scare it) and have the guy hold her earlier (I had already taken a couple shots of her standing but she kept moving so they didn’t turn out).  It was actually his suggestion that he hold her so that was a great help!

Tips To Stop Suffering From Asthma

Asthma is a malady that may be uncontrollable if left untamed. A severe asthma attack can put you in the hospital or kill you. Consulting a medical professional is the first step in any treatment plan. Beyond that, however, you must take an active role in maintaining your health. There are simple ideas here that can aid you in getting your asthma under control, and manage your symptoms a lot better.

You will not be able to deal with your asthma without understanding what causes it. Pet dander, plant pollen and everyday household dust are all common causes of asthma attacks. Once you know what is instigating your asthma attacks, it is time to take steps and avoid the cause.

If you’re an asthma sufferer, make sure to warm-up before doing strenuous exercises and cool-downs afterwords. The warm up and cool down can be an effective way to exercise safely and reduce the chance of an asthma attack.

Mold and mildew can thrive in a humid home environment. These are harmful substances that can trigger asthma attacks. So try your best to make your home as dry as possible. During the cold, winter months, a dehumidifier can help. In the summer, an air conditioner naturally takes out a lot of the humidity in the air.

Smoke is a major irritant for most asthma sufferers, so when you are cooking in the kitchen and it starts to get smokey, make sure you open a few windows to allow some fresh air in, and let the smoke out. Smoke can often trigger an asthma attack. If smoke is strong even with open windows, go outside until it’s gone.

Using four or more cleaners in your home can contribute to asthma attacks. Opt for organic cleaning products that do not contain irritating chemicals.

Learn what triggers your asthma so that you can avoid it. For some, allergens such as dust and pollen can trigger an attack. It could also be some type of strenuous exercise. Try to see what cause your asthma so that you can avoid it.

Do not smoke around your children if they have asthma. One of the primary causes of asthma is secondhand smoke. If your child is in an area where people are smoking, remove him quickly to avoid an asthma attack.

If you find your asthma requires you to use your fast-relief inhaler more than once or twice weekly, or if you have night-time attacks more than once or twice per week, tell your doctor it’s time to switch to a better medication. Talk to your doctor about it.

For those struggling with their asthma, avoiding regular contact with pets is important to control symptoms. An allergy to an animal will worsen asthma symptoms, and an animal can carry enough dust or pollen to trigger an attack.

To deal with your asthma attacks better, it is important to make a plan for dealing with attacks when they happen. So to properly handle an asthma attack, preparation is key.

Be prepared for your asthma treatment to be increased if you have a cold or hay fever. The effects of some illnesses can exacerbate the effects of your asthma, causing the need for more treatments. Your doctor may need to add new treatments to your typical asthma regimen until you are well.

Contact with pets and other animals should be minimized for the asthma sufferer. Many people with asthma also suffer from allergies to animal dander. Even without a specific allergy, asthma attacks can be triggered by the dust and dander in the air caused by the presence of an animal.

Use a dehumidifier inside your house to prevent your asthma symptoms. A dehumidifier keeps moisture out of your home. Very humid air can make breathing more difficult. Therefore, if you have a working dehumidifier, you will have more success in preventing any asthma symptoms.

As asthma attacks can potentially be fatal, ensure that you have a plan in place of how to deal quickly with your attack once it begins. This proves essential because if you are ready for an attack, you can respond and endure a lot better when one happens.

Keeping your home clean and dry is a good way to reduce attacks. To get a better handle on the amount of moisture in the air, make use of a home dehumidifier. Keeping the humidity in your home stable helps to ward off attacks that occur during high-risk seasons.

There are many different types of asthma. Understanding the specifics of your asthma will help you to avoid attack triggers in your day-to-day life. An example would be to bring in your gym bag an inhaler if you happen to have exercise-induced asthma. You can actually start preventing asthma attacks if you are aware and mindful of any patterns that your symptoms present.

Your bed linens are where pollen, dust and other allergens like to collect. You could reduce the potential impact of these asthma inducers by cleaning your sheets regularly. Fresh bed linens, washed regularly, will ensure that you can breathe a little easier while you sleep.

It is important to become as knowledgeable as possible about asthma. You can take faster, more effective action to treat your asthma condition the better you understand it. Make sure you are learning the newest information about treatments and get the best doctor to help you with it. The best thing to do is learn and research as much as you can about this condition and the treatment options that would be best for you.

If you are having an attack that is not severe, push as much air out of the lungs as possible. Breathe out fast and hard. This will force the air from your lungs. Then take three quick breaths, next a deeper breath till your lungs fill with air, then repeat the forceful exhalation again. This creates a rhythm to your breathing, making you pay attention to the breaths you take. By repeatedly forcing air out, you make room for new air so that your breathing can get back on track. This may cause you to cough or it may cause phlegm, but your breathing will be back to normal again.

The information here will surely help to guide you through your asthma, as well as gain more control over it. Hopefully, the education this article has provided you with today will lead you back to your active and fulfilling lifestyle and leave you in control of the asthma symptoms that were inhibiting and threatening you.
