Cat behavior training

Learning cat behaviors before you start training them would be an good idea for anyone that is going to train a cat’s behavior.

A cat can jump and lands on its feet as this are a natural instinct for a cat. When a kitten is first born, the cushion in a kittens paws are not developed with the cushion to land on its feet. It takes about 7 wk to develop the cushion in a cats paw for landing. A cats bone structure is unique to other animals as the bones are flexible , cat has no collar bone, which enables them to be able to twist and bend their bones A cat can jump from short distant with out sustaining any injuries.

With this behavior, you will want to teach the cat to jump hoops, sticks, or off the scratching tree. Letting a cat jump from extreme heights will cause injury to the cat.

Cats have a unique hearing ability; they are able to hear high tones and pitches, like opening a door or a can of food. Cats also have unique smelling abilities. The reason a cat will scratch or urinate on the floor , rub its self up against a door or furniture, is the cat is  leaving their scent in that areas so they will be able to come back and know they were there, in other words marking its territory. In addition, if another cat or animal comes along in the area a cat will know this. Cats can also smell with their mouths. There is a gland call 'Jacobson's organ’, it is a sac in the cats upper mouth filled with blood, as the cat smells the scent and the slightly opens their mouth and upper lip, this allows the scent to be carried in and to the sac, which it will carry the scent goes to the cat brain. This mostly happen to male cats when a female has urinated.

With these natural instincts and behaviors this can give you some insight to help you train you cat. With behavior training you will want to make sure that you allow your cat the ability in some way to play out it natural instincts and behaviors.

When training a cat for behaviors here are some things that you need to look at and take in consideration when training. Aggression especially in older cats, this can be cause from illness, other cats in the home. This you may want to contact your vet to have the cat check out to see if it is all right at this time to train a cat.

Depression and anxiety could play another part with trying to train your cat. If a cat is separated by it recent owner the cat can become depressed. Stress on a cat can be common effect on a cat. If you think that your cat has depression or high anxiety, this would be a good time to take the cat to the vet. Vets can talk to you about some of the things that may be causing this and a help list to help the cat. There are medications that a vet can prescribe for the cat to help with depression and anxiety.

Never hit a cat for a punishment the cat will learn to fear you, and fearing will be a behavior you will not be able to control or retrain. When they do something that is not right. Ignore the problem or if you catch them right a way you can associate a noise with that behavior on what you do not like or just in a stern voice tell them “NO”.

If a behavior is becoming impossible you may have to resort to the baby proof home, all containers that have food in them have a lid on it. Make sure that the counters are clean and have nothing that a cat would want to play with.

The day that you get your cat or kitten, you will want to start training at this point. This will keep many unwanted behaviors away, and hopefully not let any new behaviors to start.

Healthy cats need healthy relationships with their owner.

Basics of Cat Training

If you are planning on getting a kitten or are already a cat owner, one of your first priorities should be to train your pet. Training a kitten would naturally be easier than training an adult cat so it would be best if you could start as early as possible.
While cats cannot be trained in the manner adopted by dogs, they can be trained to develop good habits. Effective cat training almost always includes discouraging bad habits while encouraging new ones, in order to avoid potential cat behavior problems in the future. In order to achieve this, it is important to maintain a fine balance while training your pet.
The following article lists some basic cat training pointers that should be kept in mind.
Rules for Cat Training
The most important thing that you have to ensure that your training sessions are full of love and that you never overdo it. Traumatic training sessions could lead to cat behavior problems and of course, aborted trainings. Therefore, make sure that you maintain the trust and bond between your cat and yourself throughout your training sessions.
Certain aspects of training are essential to overcome cat health problems and unless your training falls under that category, never force your cat to do something that he or she does not want to do. Starting at a young age will help accelerate learning. Moreover, the use of rewards such as cat treats is always a good idea for successful training.
Other Important Aspects of Cat Training
Unlike dogs, cats are not naturally trained and thus do not respond to the usual reward and punishment routine in the expected manner. It is for this reason that cat training requires more patience than any other training. Punishing your cat for bad behavior will actually worsen the situation than actually teach the cat. Therefore, it is never a good idea to punish your cat even if you are frustrated that she is not progressing well.
You should always try to control the environment in which you want your cat to learn. Finally, try to make the experience of unwanted behavior something that your cat will not want to repeat, as this will help the cat avoid it in the future.
Other than training a kitten, it is also important to ensure that your pet does not suffer from any cat health problems by taking her to regular checkups at the vet.

Is Cat Dander Giving You The Sniffles? Prevent This Problem With These Easy Tips

Cat allergies are a common problem for millions of people around the world. While for some, it is restricted to sniffles and the occasional headaches, it is often more severe for others. Cat dander is airborne and can be carried quite far from its source. So, even if someone does not own a cat, a reaction may be triggered if there are other cats in the vicinity. Dander sticks to everything, which means that getting rid of cat dander can be quite a task
The allergic reaction to cat dander is triggered by a glycoprotein Fel D 1 which is secreted by a cat's sebaceous glands, saliva and is present in little amounts in its urine. This Fel D 1 is also present on the microscopic bits of skin that is attached at the end of cat fur. To prevent allergies, you have to make sure that your house is free of cat fur, saliva and cat urine.
You can reduce the allergens by washing all the walls and ceiling with hot soapy water. This is recommended before you even move into a house in case the previous owner or any neighbor has cats. If necessary, get the house painted. Vacuum the house with a HEPA filter fitted vacuum cleaner, especially the crevices such as windowsills, drapes and baseboards as these are places where dander tends to get trapped. Carpets are especially susceptible to dander and should be steam vacuumed regularly and cleaned periodically by professionals. The same should be done with upholstery. If possible, use vinyl or leather covers for furniture as woven fabrics trap more dander.
Beds can be covered with anti-mite sheets to reduce dander accumulation. The furnace filters should be cleaned every three months. A great way to go about this is by using a cheese cloth as it offers additional filtering. You should always dust with a wet cloth since dry dusting will scatter dander and may aggravate allergies. Since cat urine has traces of Fel D 1, try using a dust-free kitty litter, as well as gloves and a facial mask while cleaning the litter box.
Unfortunately, the struggle to remove cat dander is rarely successful. You can reduce it, but it is nearly impossible to eliminate it completely. However, with proper cleaning, allergies can be successfully kept at bay. It is for this reason that if you are planning on getting a kitten, it is always a good idea to check if any members of your family have a history of allergic reactions to cats.

Pet Stroller With a Cat in It

On the corner of a city street there was a little crowd gathering. I wandered over to see what was going on. People were complimenting and admiring a very smart lady wheeling a pet stroller. In fact the scarf she was wearing matched the stroller material. Inside this warm little cocoon on wheels was a cat! Right there in the middle of all the city traffic a cat, obviously enjoying every single moment of it.
Until a year or two ago this scene would never have happened. However much you and your cat wanted to be together there was no way to arrange it. With the invention of the pet stroller, now you can take your pet anywhere you want to. However, some cats would be much too nervous to ride in the city. In that case a nice little stroll down a country lane would be better.
Have you noticed how cats sit in the window for hours on end, watching what goes on outside? I'm convinced most of them really want to be out there. There's only one way to find out. Borrow or buy a pet stroller. Leave it standing around in the house. Cats love new places to hide and sleep in. One day when the cat is in the stroller, just wheel it gently into the yard. If the cat is absolutely terrified and freaks out, then either you've done a bad job of introducing the stroller or a stroller is not for this particular cat. However, don't give up after only one try. Humans as well as animals need to get used to something new before they like it.
Going back to the beginning, where the smart lady stood on the city street corner with her smart cat in a smart pet stroller; it turned out she was meeting a friend. The crowd grew as the friend approached wheeling a double pet stroller. There was a cat in the bottom and a little dog on the top. Gasps of appreciation and envy came from the crowd, which soon dispersed when the two ladies walked off to the shops.
However, there was a small faction of people, off to the side, who were laughing and sniggering about lazy pet owners and show offs. Others were questioning the selfish treatment of pets by the pet owners. Is forcing them into a stroller a good thing for them? Only you can decide. You love your pets and you will surely know whether they are enjoying their pet stroller ride or not. You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube! Pet strollers have been invented and are here to stay. It is only fair to your pet to give them a try.

How To Combat Ticks On Cats

Ticks are small parasites that survive on the blood they suck from the body of their host. The reason why most pet owners are concerned with ticks is that there is always the danger of these parasites injecting saliva into the body of their pets via the infected area. This could lead to serious diseases, some of which could be even fatal. Ticks on cats are generally tiny in size and often become difficult to locate. They remain attached to the host for a few days, enjoying its feast of your kitty's blood.
During the period where the ticks remain attached to the cat's body, the spot gradually tends to get sore, leading to skin inflammation. Generally, the cat would not pay much heed to these ticks and is unlikely to try to remove them, even if the affected area becomes inflammable. For this reason, it becomes necessary for you to keep an eye on the cat so that you can remove the ticks as soon as you locate them. If the ticks' count happens to be minimal, you should be able to take care of them easily. However, if the number gets alarming, it is necessary to consult a vet to get rid of them.
While you are in the process of removing the ticks, it often happens that the body of the parasite gets detached but the jaws or the head remains attached. Tweezers designed for the purpose of removing ticks on cats often helps in detaching the blood suckers minutely without causing much concern to the pet. However, there are also sprays which you should be able to get if prescribed by your vet. These sprays kill the ticks and eventually the parasites fall off your cat's body. In most cases, the afflicted area will start to heal in a short amount of time. In case the sore threatens to remain unhealed and becomes swollen, it is advisable to get it checked by your vet. Antiseptic lotions can also be applied on the infected area to facilitate soothing of the inflamed region.
In general, ticks on cats are not that harmful. However in certain cases, they have been found to be threatening and fatal as well, especially if the cat is attacked by Lyme disease or is a victim of cytauxzoonosis.
Thus, proper care and regular checkups should be able to mitigate the threats of ticks on cats and keep the cats healthy.

All You Need To Know About Cat Condos

Experienced cat owners will know that cats, just like most domestic animals, love to explore and are fascinated by new things around them. While your favorite couch could be their favorite scratch toy as well, there are ways to ensure that this does not happen. One of the avenues that many pet owners resort to is to purchase a cat condo for their feline friend. These are excellent tools to ensure that your kitty enjoys a fun, safe and comfortable environment within your home, where it can play, nap or just relax.
Understanding the Concept of Cat Condos
Cat condos are cat furniture designed specifically to allure and excite your pet into playing or relaxing for hours, without really spoiling your furniture. They come as platforms and poles, often covered with a variety of fabrics, which can offer exciting play options for cats. Available in various sizes and types, these useful cat treats are extremely popular with most cat owners today. However, choosing the perfect one would largely depend on the activity level of your cat. These are extremely useful furniture as they will make your cat stay away from your own furniture, while actually allowing it to have its own share of fun.
Caring For and Cleaning Cat Condos
Cat condos, like all other furniture in your house, require regular maintenance and cleaning, especially if you want to avoid potential cat health problems. Cleaning these equipment is extremely simple and requires taking them down into individual pieces. Disassembling them into singular pieces will actually help clean them better than if they were assembled. Once this is done, you will have to remove the cat hair with a brush and then vacuum the surface areas of the pieces to remove dust and hair. Stains on the furniture should be treated akin to stains on your carpeted floor. Odors can be removed by spraying freshener. Once this is done, it can be reassembled and set for play.
Before actually buying anything, it is important to understand the nature of your cat, its level of activity, your budget and the space that's available. Thanks to the availability of a wide array of cat condos in the market these days, choosing the perfect one has become an easy job provided you have done your homework well and taken into consideration the factors as mentioned above.

Toilet Train Cats With These Easy Tips

The process to toilet train cats might be easier than you think. If you are keen to do so, the most important thing to consider during such training is to progress gradually and not be impatient and try to speed up the process. The following article lists some important tips worth following when training a kitten or adult cat to use the toilet.
Steps for Toilet Training
The first thing you need to do before toilet training your cats is to move their litter boxes closer to the toilet. Once this is done, slowly elevate the litter box in such a way that it is parallel to the toilet seat. Make sure that the change is gradual and look out for cat behavior problems while doing so. After your cat is comfortable with the height, try to fit the box into the toilet and fix it. At this stage, make sure that you teach your cat how to sit on the seat with its four paws, so as to avoid any potential accidents. Now all you have to do is to wait until your cat is comfortable with this arrangement before trying and filling it with water gradually. In the meantime, keep cleaning the box to avoid bad odors. Once your cat is used to the box filled with water, you can try to get it to use the toilet directly.
What You Need To Keep In Mind While Toilet Training
When you toilet train cats, make sure that you progress gradually, taking note of all kinds of cat behavior problems that may come up along the way. If your cat stops using the toilet at any point of the training, make sure that you go back a few steps and start again. It is important to note that it is not usual or normal for cats to use human toilets. Moreover, given that accidents can be caused due to the height involved, it is important that you observe all safety measures as an accident could also affect the progress of your training schedule.
You should only attempt to toilet train cats when you are sure of being in the house for a long period of time. Moreover, make sure that your guests and family members are aware that such training is in progress and that they do not place the toilet lid down.
Toilet training cats should be an easy task if you know what you are doing.

The Five Most Common Cat Problems and Their Causes

Living with cats will mean experiencing cat problems in some form at some point. In each case the first thing to look into is the cat's health. Changes in a cat's well-being can often lead to changes in behaviour. Other problems with cats are often a reaction to changes and other things cats perceive to be stressful. Problems with cats are often more pronounced with cats that have been adopted from animal shelters.
Cat problems can have serious causes. Mistreatment may have had adverse effects on a cat's personality. In many cases, to gain such a cat's trust requires extra patience and reassurance. But it's very rewarding in the end.
It's important to be prepared for the kind and amount of effort it can take to gain the friendship of an abused cat. There's nothing worse for a cat than an unprepared person having to return it to the shelter. This not only exposes the cat to extra stress and another instance of rejection, but many shelters put cats down that are difficult to place.
On the other hand it's important to remember that what we consider cat problems may be just natural behaviour patterns. It's a good idea to be familiar with the feline personality to avoid misunderstandings. Trying to override the feline nature will not lead to good results. If someone's situation in life can't accommodate cats' natural behaviour, it's best for everyone's sake not to adopt a cat.
But it is possible to avoid or get a handle on existing cat problems. Some compromise can be achieved with the right training.
The five most common cat problems are:
- avoiding the litter box
- scratching furniture
- aggression/biting/scratching
- being too noisy
- eating/digging up houseplants
After eliminating health problems as a possible cause, you can explore them further as to other possible causes.Interestingly, many cat problems are in some form manmade. Let's look at a few examples.
Many types of cat litter and litter boxes are designed to appeal to the human customer. They might not appeal to cat quite so much. Or the litter box in kept in an awkward place. Cats like them to be as far as possible from their food and water dishes, away from drafts and allow them some privacy. Some cats don't like sharing with others. A new litter box can solve this. Even the most conscientious cat person may be stressed and forget to clean out the box. The cat might just have reacted the way we react to a dirty public toilet, by going somewhere else.
Scratching is also a normal activity. Clipping the claws can minimize the need to scratch. The absence of proper scratching posts may give cats an excuse to take it out on the furniture. To further put off cats, non-toxic scents that they dislike can be applied to the furniture. It can also help one's peace of mind to keep valuable pieces of furniture in a cat free room.
People that complain about cats scratching and biting have often brought this on by themselves. Whether it's playful or serious, it should be discouraged firmly but kindly. Over time cats will come to understand that such behaviour doesn't get them what they want but gets them ignored.
Similar to the previous problems, cats that practice vocal blackmail have trained their human to give in to harassment. Steadily ignoring it is the only way to end it. But it requires patience. The cat should never be punished physically or go without anything it really needs.
Eating grass and other plants is another unpopular but perfectly normal habit. One wouldn't really be happy about one's prize orchids being eaten or chewed. In addition to being unpopular with humans it can be very dangerous. By providing safe grasses (most are safe, but prior research is vital) and keeping dangerous and valuable plants out of a cat's reach, danger and damage can be avoided. Citrus and eucalyptus essential oils can be applied to the soil to discourage digging.
This article illustrates that many cat problems are relatively simple to manage. But in some cases, more elaborate measure are needed. I plan to discuss this in future article.

Why Is My Cat So Fat?

Is your cat overweight? The odds are pretty good that it is. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention has research that shows as many 57% of house cats in the US are overweight. First, you should learn the best way to tell if your cat is overweight. Then we can look at why your cat is so overweight. After that, we can look to the next steps to get your cat's weight back under control.
How do you know if your cat is overweight? What does a fit and healthy cat look like? You can answer this with a body condition score of your pet. First, look down on it from above. Can you see a naturally occurring waist between the back of its ribs and its pelvis? With a fluffy cat, you may need to use your hands to feel for this. Then put your hands on its chest. If you can easily feel its ribs, it is probably fine. If you can feel a thick layer of fat between your hands and the bones, then your cat is overweight.
So how did your cat get so fat? Many people think that spaying or neutering their cat made it overweight, and veterinarians say that removing your cat's hormones can change its metabolism and it can change its activity level. Just like with humans, if a cat develops a sedentary lifestyle and doesn't change the way it eats, it will probably put on weight. So if you have recently had your cat fixed, it makes sense to monitor its body condition score a couple of times a week. If you see its body begin to fill out, change its diet. The earlier you make the change, the better off your cat will be.
How can you stop your cat from getting overweight? Or if it has already gotten a little thick, how can you stop the weight gain before your cat becomes enormous? There is no trick to this. Just like with people, the answer for cat obesity is diet and exercise. The vet really can't help that much. There is a medication for overweight dogs, but it is not safe for cats. So it is up to you to improve your cat's diet, cut down on the amount of food it gets in a day, and provide it an opportunity for exercise.
Just because you have an indoor only cat, that is no excuse for it to be lazy. A healthy cat will exercise and play if it is given the chance. You just need to make sure that it has something it can climb up on. Cats love to climb and look down on people. They also love to look out of windows, so if you have a window sill your cat can climb up on, make sure you keep it uncluttered so he can enjoy it. You may want to buy it some kind of carpeted climbing structure, but before you do, check to see if there is anything in the house that discourages your cat from being active. You might not have noticed this before, but it could be that anytime your cat moves around your house, your dog chases it. Or worse, your children do. So before you add things to the environment, it may be there are things you need to take away, or little people who need some instructions on how to play nice with the cat.
If you think your cat is overweight, you may be right since well over half of US cats are. You can check your cat's body condition score to know if it is overweight or not. It could be that your cat is fat in response to having been spayed or neutered, or there could be something else that changed its activity level. You can do your part to help your cat's health by altering its diet and giving it more chances to play and be active. So why is your cat so overweight? Because you haven't started helping it lose weight yet.
Having been raised with six, yes, 6 house cats, I thought I had learned everything about our precious felines. A rude awakening when what I thought would be easy turned out to be very, very difficult. Taking several years of painful, and expensive, learning and sharing it right here.

Cat Pain - You Can Kill Your Cat Using This Common Pain Killer

The last thing a vet wants to tell a cat owner is that the cat's pain treatment killed the cat. Yet, it does happen, even to people who are the most loving cat owners. Here are some tips for recognizing your cat's pain. Before you reach for that bottle of over-the-counter pain medication in your medicine cabinet, consider using natural products that are proven to relieve cat pain.
Cats are notorious for hiding pain. After all, they sleep most of the day and when they wake up they immediately give themselves a good stretching tune-up. As you watch her execute a perfect "down dog" and "half moon" position, you wonder if cats actually invented yoga.
However, now you notice that she is hesitating a bit before she jumps off the couch. When she lands, you note that there is a bit of a limp in her gait. If this is the first time you noticed the limp it may be a temporary cat pain, but with cats over 5, the limp may be a symptom of feline arthritis.
Sadly, some people make the mistake of giving their cat the same medication they take for pain relief. One of these, Tylenol, can kill your cat. Don't be tempted help your cat with people-meds. It is bad medicine.
There is not a clear way to know if your cat is having pain. However, there are some clues:
1. Abnormal sleeping posture
2. Unusual gait
3. Vocalization
4. Persistent licking
5. Unusual litter box behavior
6. Decreased appetite
7. Stops grooming
When a cat is comfortable, you'll notice that she curls up into a ball or even stretches out as if she is flying through the air like Supercat in her dreams. These are signs that your cat is comfortable. However, if you notice your kitty is lying upright with her feet under her body, but to you it seems that she is not relaxing, then she is uptight about something. It could be an external influence, like another cat bothering her, or it may mean that she is fighting discomfort or pain. She isn't comfortable enough to relax and this is apparent in her posture.
Of course, if you cat is limping or yowls when she moves then that's a sure sign of cat pain. However, if you notice that she is persistently licking an area, like her shoulder or toes, then this is a sign that she aches in her cat joints. Your cat doesn't have fingers so she uses her tongue to massage her aches and pains.
The opposite of this is when your cat stops grooming. This is a sure sign that something is wrong. If she is leaving her food bowl full of food and not eating, again another sure sign of a problem.
If your cat's litter box behavior has taken a turn for the worse, this is another sign something is wrong. It can mean that she has a feline urinary infection, but it can also mean that there is another physical problem. Don't immediately assume this is a behavior problem, especially in an older cat. You should suspect a physical problem first. Cats are notoriously clean animals; when they stop grooming or properly using the litter box it's her way of giving you a clear message--get me help!
The good news is that you don't have to immediately turn to drugs to give your cat relief. However, before you start any protocol, talk with your veterinarian. Vets are accustomed to prescribing analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to treat cat pain. Talk to your vet about options that don't involve prescription medications, but are proven to help reduce cat pain.
More vets are open to using homeopathic solutions to help kitties deal with illnesses and pain naturally. One benefit of using natural remedies is that you can use them for long-term treatment of cat pain, like feline arthritis. Osteoarthritis in cats is a progressive disease and your kitty will need long term pain relief. Your vet may sell these products, but you can also find them online from homeopathic resources.
You can find these natural remedies to help give your kitty relief from cat pain. It's easy to give you cat too as it comes in a liquid format that you can mix in her food or water http://ArthritisCatsTreatment.com.

Preventing Hairballs In Your Furry Friend

Hairballs are one of the many problems that a cat owner would be facing in its pet's lifetime. A hairball is lumps of hair ingested by a cat and passed out through coughing or through defecation; either way this is very messy to clean. Hairballs can cause intestinal problems in a cat if this does not pass out, and cause blockage in the intestines of your pet cat, which would need veterinary intervention and this is expensive. There are ways that you can prevent this from happening. This may not eliminate hairballs totally but this can lower the risk of complications.
The most obvious one is to groom your cat regularly. Combing the fur of the cat at regular intervals can help minimize their ingestion of the loose fur, which is a very simple thing to do. There are many kinds of brushes that would be appropriate for the type of fur your cat has. Brushing your cat's fur regularly would get the loose hair and even if they still groom themselves often the hair that they can ingest would be minimal and this would be easily passed out. For long haired cats, it is best to brush their fur every day to get all the loose hair off as these long hairs would be of greater risk of getting stuck inside their intestinal tract.
Giving your cat some hairball preventing fluid mixed in their food can help pass out their fur. These are usually made from vegetable fiber which would help the hairball pass through the intestinal tract easily. These vegetable fiber additives come in various forms and some offer other benefits to the cat. Asking advice from your cat's vet would be a very wise decision when giving your cat something that you are not sure of. This would prevent more complications that your cat would suffer from ingesting substances that may harm them more.
There are certain cat laxatives that can be given to a cat if the hairball is getting into a problem inside your cat's intestines. This should first be consulted with the veterinarian so that they would be able to give the needed dosage to help in passing out the hairball from your cat's intestinal tract. Some of these laxatives have a strong ingredient which can harm the intestines of your cat if not used properly. In whatever medication that you would give to your pet cat, it is very important that you consult the veterinarian first to be sure.
There are plenty of things that a pet would need and one of these is the best pet health insurance. Taking care of a pet can be very easy with the help of the best pet health insurance.

Taking Care Of A Pet Cat

There are some people who prefer to have a pet cat than any other animal. With a cat there is no worry of it destroying all the precious things at home and this does not make a big mess in the house. Cats are preferred by other people because of their playful nature and affectionate behaviour. But having a cat at home still requires a great deal of attention and care from the pet owner. There are certain things that a cat would need that would keep it healthy.
Cats are picky eaters and giving them the right food would help them in their nourishment and health. There are different kinds of cat food in the market and some of these your cat may not be fond of. Getting the food that it likes would ensure that it gets the needed nourishment for it to stay healthy. Some foods have additional ingredients that would help in keeping the cat healthy which is why it is very important to read what the label says about the food. You could also ask your vet on what they would recommend for the type of cat you have. Changing the food often would give its taste buds a variety of flavors keeping it interested in its food.
To keep your cat away from scratching and damaging the corners of your furniture, a scratching pole would be a good idea to have. You can start by putting a piece of fabric that is similar to the furniture that they love to scratch on a piece of wooden pole. They need to keep their claws sharp and exercise their muscles and a separate scratching pole can achieve this without them damaging your furniture.
Some cats prefer to have their own place to sleep in or rest and there are plenty cat litter boxes or baskets that can be found in pet stores, but if you are saving on expenses then an ordinary box can be made into one. Your cat would be equally comfortable as long as you place a cushion or blanket for it to stay in.
Cats still love to be petted even though these don't go near you all the time. Constant attention is what a cat wants and petting them whenever you have the time would make them appreciate you more. They would be more affectionate to you giving you their attention in return.
Having pet health insurance can be very helpful in maintaining the health of your pet. With pet health insurance you would not have to worry about the expenses associated with it.

The Key Benefits Of A Pet Door With a Locking System

Do you own a pet cat? In case you do, I am certain you ran into a classical difficulty: Do you want to allow your kitty to go out or not? The answer to this problem is determined by many aspects. In case you have a flat, it's going to be quite problematic for the kitten to go outside and survive amid the city's traffic and agglomeration.
However, if you have a residence in the suburban area, letting your cat spend some time outside the house will be a good option. Let's not forget that felines aren't indoor plants. They are gorgeous and strong creatures, predators which like being free, sprinting, scratching trees and fences, exploring new territories, running after smaller creatures or taking a nap in the sun light. If the safety of your area allows it, don't keep the pet away from the satisfaction of engaging in all these normal cat activities.
In the event you came to the conclusion that your cat can go out everyday, there exists one more issue ready to be solved: Does the occupation of becoming your pet's doorman sound attractive to you? If not, I would recommend purchasing a cat flap and instructing your pet how to use it.
Everybody knows what a cat flap is - is that little flap set up on your entrance door which allows your kitty to leave the house and come back home any time she'd like without 'asking' you to open the door for her. Simple cat doors are good, of course, but they also include a number of negative aspects: being made from rubber, plastic or wood, they swing out and in, letting your pet to go through when pushed. But, regrettably, with a simple flap, your kitty will not be the only one getting into the house. Breezes and chilly air, little puppies, raccoons and other kitties will be able to take advantage of the comforts of your house as well.
That's why I'll advise you to get a cat door with a lockable mechanism. The major benefit of these products is safety. You will find a lot of various models on the internet and select the one you consider best for your four-legged friend and your house's protection. After setting up such a cat door, all you have to do is plant a transmitter on your kitten and that's it! She'll become the only one capable of open the door. Even when she's being chased by a puppy, your pet can always count on her little door - it's going to close immediately after she steps through, 'abandoning' the discouraged doggy outside. Soon your kitten will find out that her new little door is not only her way to freedom, but also to comfort and security!
A genuine kitty lover is the individual who values his furry friend's character, basic instincts and needs. Always bear in mind that your pet is a magnificent creature that cherishes her liberty! Locking pet safe cat flaps will keep your kitten safe, content and purring, simultaneously offering you a quiet rest. If you're searching for advanced safety options, look at the innovative electromagnetic cat door.

Does Your Overweight Cat Drink Enough?

Are you worried that your overweight cat is not getting enough to drink? You have probably tried different methods to get your cat to drink but none seems to be working. Not too worry, you are not alone. Cats can be very finicky and are not big water drinkers.
Here are some signs that your overweight cat is not drinking enough.
Constipation: Have you been noticing usual bowel movements in your cat lately. When your cat is not drinking enough, you will start noticing signs of constipation.
Thick Saliva: If you notice that your cat's saliva is jello-like, it probably means that your pet is not drinking enough. In a normal condition, your overweight cat's saliva should be wet and liquidy.
Fatigue: Is your cat showing signs of fatigue? Is your overweight cat just mopping around the house and has become less active than usual. This is another sign telling you that your cat is not drinking enough water.
When you start noticing these signs in your overweight cat, it's probably too late. The best thing you can do is to take your cat to the veterinary hospital. The veterinarian will be able to administer the right drug to get your cat back in shape.
Cats that don't drink enough are prone to all kinds of diseases. Most of the common diseases are bladder infections, acute kidney failure and kidney stone. These diseases can lead to serious problems and even result in death. Paying close attention to your cat's drinking habit is very important because it will help your pet in the long run from contracting various types of cat diseases.
Getting your overweight cat to drink enough water can be a bit tricky. You might need to start thinking like a cat. There are several ways which you can help your cat drink more water.
Fresh Clean Water: It might seem obvious but overlooked. Make sure your cat has fresh clean water throughout the day. Change the water in the bowl at least three to four times a day. You can add crushed ice cubes to keep the water cool.
Canned Food: Most cat owners prefer to feed their cat's dry food which is not enough to provide the necessary liquid their body needs. Since canned food contains a lot more liquid, your overweight cat will be getting some sort of additional liquid.
Kitty Water Fountain: Though it might cost you some money, a water fountain is probably one of the best ways to get your overweight cat to drink more water. The water fountain will keep the water clean, fresh and even keep your cat entertained.

Are You Worried About Your Cats Throwing Up? Find Out The Causes And Remedies

Feline lovers, do not worry about your cats throwing up as this is one of the most common cat health problems today. There are several causes of this ailment that can range from dietary changes to general habits and even the quality of grooming that you are giving your cats. Fortunately, most of the time, cat vomiting is not the sign of a grave illness and can be treated easily.
Once you know the general causes that can lead to cats throwing up, you can make an effort to avoid them and prevent this health disorder in your cat. Have a look at some of the common causes for cat vomiting:
Causes
If not groomed properly, cats tend to swallow lots of hair every time they lick themselves. This can cause a hairball problem in them which can lead to vomiting. Though proper grooming can take care of this problem, medical attention will be required in severe cases.
If you have made sudden changes in the diet of your cat, you will have to be aware that it can lead to vomiting as your pet's stomach is very sensitive. The best practice to avoid this condition would be to mix up the two types of food, with more quantity of the old food and a small amount of the new food until your kitty gets adjusted to the new one.
Another common cause that can lead to cats throwing up is the habit of eating fast, especially if your household has multiple cats. Cats have the tendency to gobble up their food as fast as possible so that the other cats around it cannot help themselves to it. Giving small meals frequently to your pets can help you get rid of this problem.
Remedies
In severe cases, you will have to call your vet to give your kitty the necessary medical attention. Otherwise, withholding water and food for at least half a day or a full day will relieve the upset stomach of your cat and will generally help in checking tendency to throw up.
Giving a small amount of chamomile tea to the cat can also help in reducing its vomiting. This is a mild herbal cure that will work if the condition is not very serious.
However, in case you are not sure if your kitty's condition is normal or if it has contracted a more serious cat health problem, it is always better to consult a vet.

Spaying and Neutering Your Cats

What is cat spaying and is it a cruel procedure? On the contrary, cat spaying or neutering, apart from being beneficial in reducing the feline population, is also important for health reasons. Once your cat become pregnant, it is important to decide never to allow her to get pregnant again. Whilst neutering your male cat will help reduce the chances proactively, it is equally important to spay your female one after it has given birth.
What exactly is Spaying or Neutering?
Cat spaying or neutering involves the removal of the reproductive organs in the cat, which in turn will help prevent reproduction as well as overt sexual behavior in cats. This is extremely important for both checking the population growth as well as to keep your pets healthy.
Advantages of Spaying or Neutering
In male cats or tom cats, neutering helps to reduce cat spraying, especially strong smelling urine, which otherwise is common amongst cats in heat. Moreover, it also reduces the territorial instinct in cats, resulting in lesser urges to fight while also reducing the urge to flee for cover. This in turn reduces the number of cuts and abrasions caused due to such fights. With respect to cat health problems, neutered cats are under a lesser risk of contracting feline AIDS or feline leukemia. Also, male cats are free from cancer of the mammary as well as testicular cancer after neutering. Spaying female cats is equally beneficial with cat spaying preventing cancer of the mammary as well as ovarian or uterine cancer along with Pyometritis. More importantly, future pregnancies are easily avoided through spaying.
It is important to note that when in heat, cats tend to roam and make loud noises. This stage is often traumatic and can be painful for your pet. This can avoided through cat spaying or neutering that removes the reproductive system, thus removing the tendencies of roaming or making loud noises in cats. Given the multiple advantages of spaying, it is best to spay your cats immediately. However, it is important to ensure that you go to a trusted veterinarian for performing this minor surgery so that your pet's health is not compromised by dubious practitioners.
Cat neutering is not a cruel procedure and is common among many cat owners today. We hope that this article gives you some insight on the benefits of this procedure and allows you to make an informed decision if you are on the fence about spaying your cat.
