Every year there are common names chosen for our furry friends? Some years the names remain the same and others they change drastically, but what are the common choices that were popular in 2010?
In first place was Sassy. Sassy was a firm favorite with all female cats and means pretty girl. It is of French origin and is the perfect choice for a really pretty kitten.
Precious was in second place. Precious is of Latin origin and means virtue, though most people called their new family additions this because they are held dear to them.
Third was a common choice which has been in the top choices for years for all types of pets and that is Maggie. Maggie is of Greek origin and means Pearl. Another great choice for a very special pet.
Lily came in fourth. Lily means flower and is also of Green origin. Lily is closely followed by Lucy which is of French origin and means light.
The sixth most popular choice was Coco, which actually means coconut and is of Spanish origin. Though most people chose this female cat name due to the dark coat of their new pet in relation to cocoa beans.
Seventh is Cleo and while a very popular choice it actually means glory of the father and is of Green origin.
Whiskers were in eighth place and once again a firm favorite as it has been for many years. Whiskers means exactly what it says, the long hairs on your pets face and is of English origin.
Ninth place went to Callie. While usually more popular for dogs, Callie came up in the top ten choices for our feline friends. It means female ruler and is of Tentonic origin.
Holly came in tenth. Holly means exactly what it says and is of English origin. A great choice for a Christmas kitten.
Making the decision on what to name your new female cat can be a hard decision, with so many choices it's always a good idea to try and find something unique and different. While so many of us choose the common names that so many other feline pets have, we don't always realize what the meanings are and where the names originated from.
Taking the time to research these names and call our cat accordingly doesn't cross our minds, though a kitten which is held dear to the family would benefit from being called Precious and a kitten that rules the roost would benefit from Callie.
If you take a little time to get to know your new fluffy friends personality and nature, do some research and name them accordingly, they will not only have a wonderful name but it will bear meaning.
Being different from everyone else shows how unique your new pet is and if you know what their name means, it can immediately show off their personality and nature. Obviously if you have a new kitten with long whiskers that are a feature on its face, choosing the common Whiskers is the first obvious choice, but if she is a ray of sunshine and a pleasure to have in the home, don't you think she'd be better off being called Lucy?
