Allergies & Asthma

Allergies are often treated with chiropractic care. Many allergic and asthmatic reactions are caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system and/or respiratory system. Researchers have found that the immune and respiratory systems depend on normal communication from the brain and spinal cord to control and coordinate their functions properly.
Therefore, if your neck is misaligned, it could cause an imbalance in your nervous system function. This upper cervical spinal joint irritation could possibly produce or exaggerate asthmatic and allergic symptoms. For example; many asthma and allergy sufferers experienced traumas such as head injuries, auto accidents, or falls which could have injured their upper cervical spines. The good news is that we can perform an upper cervical examination to determine if chiropractic care can reduce your allergic and asthmatic reactions.

Colloidal Silver, Allergies, Asthma and Inflammation

Are hidden infections by pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa a cause of respiratory inflammation associated with common allergies and asthma?

Brand new research says this may well be the case.  The good news is this:  Colloidal silver decimates Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.  This may well be why allergy sufferers often find such dramatic relief from colloidal silver!

Hi, Steve Barwick here, for www.TheSilverEdge.com

Now this is quite interesting: According to new research published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, a common bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is involved in some cases of respiratory inflammation that can lead to allergies, asthma or other serious respiratory conditions.

Here’s what an article published on the website of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology had to say about the study:

“Could some cases of asthma actually be caused by an allergic reaction to a common environmental bacteria?  New research findings published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology suggests that this idea may not be as far-fetched as it seems.

In a research report appearing in the February 2012 print issue, researchers show a link between common environmental bacteria and airway inflammation.

Specifically, their research suggests that some strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa cause white blood cells to produce very high levels of histamine, which in turn leads to inflammation, a hallmark symptom of asthma.”

Of course, excessive histamine release is also a hallmark symptom of common allergies, too, particularly the red, itchy eyes, puffy skin, runny nose and sometimes painful, swollen nasal passages.

The article goes on to admit that modern medicine doesn’t really have a good handle on what causes such allergic reactions.  But they hope this most recent study will shed some light on the possible role of bacteria such as Pseudomona aeruginosa in triggering such reactions:

“Despite advances in diagnosing and treating the symptoms of asthma and allergy, our understanding of the underlying initiating events remains elusive,” said John Wherry, Ph.D., Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology.

“This report helps shed light on how an ‘everyday organism’ might trigger asthma and allergy from an immune cell type not normally thought to be involved in allergic disease.”

Excessive Histamine Release

What the researchers actually discovered is the fact that the Pseudomonas aeruginosa pathogen triggers a specific type of white blood cells called neutrophils to produce excessive levels of histamines, a potent inflammatory vasodilator involved in the body’s immune system response.

“We hope that these findings will encourage human-focused research regarding bacterial stimulation of histamine production by white blood cells, like neutrophils, that are not traditionally associated with allergic inflammation.

Such research could improve our understanding of inflammation in bacterial infections, and help us to craft therapies for relief of inflammation and its consequences for short and long-term health.”

– George Caughey, M.D., a researcher involved in the study from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and University of California in San Francisco

Normally, histamine release is designed to increase blood flow to specific areas of the body, in order to cleanse the area of toxins or other debris.

But when excessive levels of histamine are triggered, it can cause many of the symptoms of allergies, such as incessant runny nose, sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, as well as redness and puffy skin.

Excessive histamine release can also result in more severe swelling, which in airway and respiratory conditions can include asthmatic symptoms such as bronchial constriction and decreased lung function.

In both cases, doctors can only provide symptomatic relief with prescription medications that generally have to be taken for life.

That’s why this new study is so important, and why researchers are so excited about it.  If some cases of allergy and asthma are indeed triggered by the Pseudomonas aeruginosa pathogen, medications designed to treat the root cause of the condition rather than the symptoms alone can be studied and developed.

In other words, an antibiotic drug may actually cure the condition, rather than merely providing a temporary bandaid.

Colloidal Silver to the Rescue!

What the researchers are not yet talking about is the fact that numerous published clinical studies and reports have proven the Pseudomonas aeruginosa pathogen is highly susceptible to antimicrobial silver, including colloidal silver!

Indeed, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the very same bacteria that tends to infect the skin of burn victims, leading to practically unstoppable skin infections that ultimately result in death.

But various forms of antimicrobial silver – including silver compounds such as dilute silver nitrate and silver sulfadiazine cream — have been used in hospital burn wards for decades to stop Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in their tracks.

Indeed, these silver-based products have saved literally tens of thousands of burn victims from suffering painful, agonizing deaths that would otherwise be caused by the Pseudomonas aeruginosa pathogen!

As I wrote of this common but deadly pathogen in an article back in January 2011:

“Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the leading causes of death in post-operative infections, burn infections and lung infections.

What’s more, it’s also a major cause of urinary tract infections, respiratory system infections, dermatitis, soft tissue infections, bacteremia (invasion of the bloodstream by a pathogen), bone and joint infections, gastrointestinal infections and a variety of systemic infections

Worse yet, Pseudomonas is likely to become an even greater cause of illness and disease in the future, because it is now one of the most highly antibiotic-resistant pathogens on the face of the earth.”

More importantly, as I mentioned earlier, it’s not just silver compounds such as silver nitrate or silver sulfadiazine that have been demonstrated to be effective against the Pseudomonas aeruginosa pathogen.

Indeed, safe, natural colloidal silver has repeatedly been proven in clinical studies to destroy this pathogen!

Numerous Clinical Studies

In my previous article on Colloidal Silver and Pseudomonas Infections, I cited numerous clinical studies demonstrating that colloidal silver is highly effective against this pathogen.

These included an Egyptian study conducted by the Department of Microbiology at the National Organization for Drug Control and Research in Giza, Egypt, and published in the International Journal of Microbiological Research [1 (1): 33-36, 2010].

This study demonstrated that multiple antibiotic-resistant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were literally decimated by colloidal silver, and indeed, the colloidal silver was far more effective than the antibiotic drugs tested!

I also discussed a 2008 study titled “In Vitro Evaluation of the Activity of Colloidal Silver Concentrate Against Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolated from Postoperative Wound Infection,” which was conducted jointly by the Department of Applied Microbiology at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, Nigeria, and the Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Nigeria, at Nsukka, Nigeria.

This study also demonstrated conclusively that colloidal silver is profoundly effective against the Pseudomonas aeruginosa pathogen.

What’s more, I discussed a study conducted at the Department of Textile Science, Nanya Institute of Technology, in Taiwan, which was published in the journal Colloids Surface B Biointerfaces in October 2007.

It too demonstrated that “colloidal silver nanoparticles” were highly effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

And I discussed the well-known time-kill study conducted at the University of North Texas by Mark A. Farinha, Ph.D., Professor of Microbiology, who found that colloidal silver killed the Pseudomonas pathogen within four minutes, in concentrations of 15 ppm and 30 ppm.

According to Dr. Farinha:

“Two concentrations of isolated silver were used, one 15 PPM isolated colloidal silver and one 30 PPM isolated colloidal silver.

The 30 PPM colloidal silver achieved results markedly faster, although both formulations achieved the desired results within four minutes…

…The in-vitro lab results conclusively demonstrate that a high quality isolated colloidal silver product is remarkably effective in concentrations of both 15 PPM and 30 PPM against Psuedomonas aeruginosa.”

And finally, I discussed the well-known October 2006 study conducted at the Department of Microbiology/Molecular Biology of Brigham-Young University, and published in the journal Current Science (Vol. 91, No. 7).

In this study, the researchers found that a number of antibiotic drugs that were no longer effective against multiple drug-resistant pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, MRSA and E. coli, could actually be restored to full efficacy against the deadly pathogens – but only if a liquid silver solution of colloidal silver was used in conjunction with the antibiotic drug!

The researchers wrote:

“Silver–Water–Dispersionâ„¢ solution has been shown as an effective antibiotic against many…multiple drug-resistant (MDR) strains (including) Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. Coli and MRSA.”

Colloidal Silver And

Inflammatory Lung Conditions

I find it very interesting that this very same pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is now being indicted as a possible cause of allergies, asthma and respiratory inflammation is frequently isolated in the lungs of Cystic Fibrosis patients.

According to MedicalNewsToday.com:  “Infections with the bacteria Pseudomonas are a major cause of sickness and death in Cystic Fibrosis patients.”

Cystic Fibrosis patients can suffer from horrific life-threatening bouts of bronchitis and inflammation of the lungs and respiratory tissues similar to severe allergy and asthma attacks.

Has colloidal silver ever been shown to alleviate these inflammatory symptoms in cystic fibrosis patients?  Indeed it has!

For example, according to the study “Colloidal Silver for Lung Disease in Cystic Fibrosis,” published in the prestigious Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine in 2008 (J R Soc Med 2008: 101: S51–S52. DOI 10.1258/jrsm.2008.s18012):

“We report the case of a 12-year-old boy with severe Cystic Fibrosis lung complications who was treated by his family with colloidal silver.

The child was diagnosed aged two following investigations for faltering growth. He had extensive left lower lobe bronchiectasis and positive Pseudomonas aeruginosa cultures at diagnosis.

This organism persisted despite aggressive IV antibiotics, long term nebulized colomycin, bronchoscopy and a prolonged in-patient stay.”

The study goes on to explain that as the child aged, numerous inflammatory infections of his respiratory tract set in, severely reducing his lung function.

But the child’s family “discovered websites promoting colloidal silver for Cystic Fibrosis and purchased the product from their local health food shop. They independently commenced 2.5 mL b.i.d. of the solution in July 2006.”   That’s only half a teaspoonful, twice daily.

And what happened?  According to the authors of the study:

“Over the next three months the patient achieved a sustained improvement in symptoms, which persisted following weaning from oral steroids, nebulized antibiotics and regular asthma medications…

…He remained well for a year, enjoying a skiing holiday, full participation in school rugby matches and significant improvements in his golf handicap.

He required only one further course of IV antibiotics until a recent deterioration coinciding with temporary interruption of colloidal silver for a month…

…He has remained well for a further six months after resuming colloidal silver, with no other changes in his routine care.”

Connecting the Dots

The fact that Cystic Fibrosis patients often suffer from Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in their lungs is nothing new.  Doctors have known of this for decades.

And recent studies have also demonstrated that Pseudomonas aeruginosa are increasingly involved in C.O.P.D., i.e., Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.  (See study here.)

So why not also in respiratory conditions such as allergy and asthma?

Way back in Nov-Dec of 1955, a study titled “Bronchial Asthma Caused By Pseudomonas aeruginosa Diagnosed By Bronchoscopic Examination” was published in journal Annals of Allergy.

But in spite of that older study, until only recently the standard response from medical science has been “There is no known association between asthmaand Pseudomonas aeruginosainfections.”

I’m quite surprised researchers have not connected the dots by now and realized that inflammatory lung conditions like Cystic Fibrosis, other lung conditions like C.O.P.D.,  and conditions of respiratory inflammation such as asthma and allergy might have a single common bacterial connection.

After all, it seems the more scientists look, the more they find pathogenic microorganisms behind ailments people have suffered from (often needlessly) for years.

This includes a number of autoimmune diseases and chronic degenerative diseases. (See Infectious Microorganisms: the Real Culprits Behind Today’s Most Debilitating Chronic Degenerative Diseases?)

Is This Why Allergy Suffers

Find Colloidal Silver So Helpful?

Now that the Pseudomonas aeruginosa pathogen has been indicted as a potential trigger in some cases of allergic and asthmatic conditions, I have to ask the next question:

Could this be why allergy sufferers often swear colloidal silver helps dramatically reduce their symptoms?

Here are what some very happy colloidal silver users have had to say about their own personal experiences with colloidal silver and allergies:

I No Longer Need the Antibiotics for My Sinus Allergies

“My name is Jerry and I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area which has been called the allergy center of the world. I’m sure other places have adopted the same label, but regardless I would regularly miss a week’s work each spring and fall due to allergies.

Usually my Doctor would prescribe a Z-Pack to get me going again. Even after I retired I continued to need a couple of Z-packs per year.

Over a year and a half ago I purchased your Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generator along with The Ultimate Colloidal Silver Manual and began taking periodic preventive doses orally; sometimes daily and other times once a week but never more than an ounce at a time.

When sneezing bouts begin I spray Colloidal Sliver up my nose. Z-packs are no longer needed!”

          – Jerry C., Haltom City, Texas

Heals Eye Allergies With A Single Dose!

“I put a drop or two of colloidal silver into my eyes 1-3 times a day whenever they feel scratchy due to allergies. It’s amazing how fast your eyes feel better, and sometimes all it takes is one dose!”

          – Diane L., Erie, MI

“First Time No Allergies!”

“Thanks to colloidal silver water this is the first fall in all the years I can remember that allergies have not been an affliction. Just last week another priest of this diocese remarked on how healthy I have appeared of recent.”

          – A.W.C., St. Thomas Episcopal Church

I’ve Been Able to Enjoy Being Outside Again
Without My Allergies Sending Me Into a State of Panic!”

“I just recently purchased a

Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generator and the manual. I have known about the health benefits of colloidal silver for a long time but never pursued my options for it until now…

…After taking Colloidal Silver for a couple of months and using it as a nasal spray, I have been able to enjoy being outside again without my allergies sending me into a state of panic…Thanks so much.”

          – A. Walls

Of course, not all cases of allergy or asthma are triggered by pathogens like Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Dust, pollen, pet dander and other substances, as well as chemical sensitivity, food allergies and other conditions are also known triggers of the histamine-related inflammation associated with these ailments. And there are other causes as well.

This may be one reason why some people with allergies or asthma seem to respond well to colloidal silver, while others don’t.

Regardless, considering the long-term suffering allergy and asthma victims tend go through, it might be worth their while to at least give colloidal silver a try.

After all, if a pathogen like Pseudomonas aeruginosa is causing the problem, a simple sniff up the nose of colloidal silver twice a day for a few weeks – and then every now-and-again as symptoms present themselves — might be the ticket to an allergy-free life!

Heals Sinus Problems, Too!

In her article Breathe Clearly Again Using Colloidal Silver and a Neti Pot, natural health writer Angela Kaelin explains that sinus problems are often caused by allergy-induced irritation of the sinus passages, which of course can be caused by microorganisms.

She goes on to detail how to use a simple device called a Neti Pot, along with colloidal silver, to breathe freely again and short circuit the vicious cycle of nasal inflammation and breathing problems.  To read the article, just click the link in the paragraph above.

And in my article, Colloidal Silver and Sinus Problems, I detail four very simple ways to rapidly and effectively alleviate pesky sinus problems using colloidal silver.

Here are a few anecdotal accounts from readers who swear by colloidal silver for their sinus problems:

No Sinus Allergy Problems All Year!

“I’m writing this for my mother who is 86 years old and has no computer and wanted me to let you know the following:

She would not think of giving up her

colloidal silver or her generator. Mom wanted you to know that she is 86 years old and has had no sinus problems this year since she uses it as nose drops (Oklahoma is notorious for allergies and sinus problems!)”

          – N.O., Oklahoma

Annoying Sinus Allergy Condition Resolved!

“…an employee had a severe (annoying to me) sinus condition that she had been fighting for about 3-4 years with antibiotics that would work for a while then come back.

She had it so bad she actually had a Family Medical Leave Act ‘sick leave’ to protect her attendance (reporting off from work), and from losing her job because of it.

I gave her some info on colloidal silver in general and she ended up trying some (pouring some into her nasal cavities).

After a week or two her condition is all but gone, with just a few ‘allergy flare ups’ which are nothing compared to how miserable she was and annoying to us with her constant snorting/blowing her nose.”

          – Todd, Ohio

Chronic Sinus Congestion Greatly Relieved!

“I have chronic sinus congestion & used to have chronic sinus infections. Now they are few and far between since I started putting colloidal silver into my NeilMed Sinus Rinse Neti Pot, once in the morning and once in the evening.

I do two rinses at a time. The first one is according to NeilMed directions (no colloidal silver). The second one, I make 1/2 NeilMed solution (just a touch of the salt) & 1/2 colloidal silver.

As long as I am consistent in doing this, I have no infections. If I get lazy and skip this routine a few days in a row, I’m doomed!”

          – D.L., MI

Severe Sinus/Pain Headache Gone In An Hour!

“I had struggled in the spring and autumn seasons before due to heavy pollen with severe sinus pain/headache, etc.

I lay on my bed with my head back hanging slightly over the bed, and I drop three drops of silver into each nostril, lay there for one minute (the “slight” stinging lets you know it made it there), then I blow my nose.

I repeat the process one more time. Within an hour my suffering subsides, and my head feels clear.”

          – DH, Charleston, WV

Cured a Very Painful Sinus Infection!

“I put some colloidal silver in a nasal spray bottle and sprayed it up my nose to cure a very painful sinus infection.”

          – T.R.B., Montgomery, TX

No More Sinus Infections for Down Syndrome Child!

“I have a child with Down Syndrome and her immune system was weakened with chronic sinus infection.

Started her taking 1 teaspoon 3 times a day and no more sinus infections. I have her hold it under her tongue for 30 seconds and then gargle it.

Love our

colloidal silver machine! We paid $ 94 for 16 ounces before we got our machine, and now we make colloidal silver for just pennies.”

          – K.M., Oregon

No More Sinus Headaches/Migraines!

“I use it instead of sinus spray to clear my sinuses and keep from getting sinus headaches/migraines.

I just emptied out a saline solution bottle and spray it in my nose in the morning and it works great.

This is a wonderful product and I’m so glad to be able to have my own generator and make my own.”

          – M.J.S., Lansing, MI

Healed Green Nasal Sinus Discharge!

“I’ve used the colloidal silver liquid as a nasal spray for sinus infections.

I have chronic allergy problem to dust, etc. for which I use Xlear nasal spray for maintenance and that works well for that.

However during my last cold I had started showing green nasal discharge. So I cleaned out an empty Xlear bottle and filled it with colloidal silver using it about 2 squirts four times daily. Within a few days the green discharge cleared up and I discontinued it after five days.”

          – Jake, Richland Center, WI

One Final Thought…

The drug companies, of course, want you hooked on antihistamine drugs or sinus medications for the rest of your life.

That’s why they don’t develop drugs that solve the root causes of allergic reactions and respiratory inflammation (i.e., such as hidden Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections) but instead focus on producing drugs that provide only temporary symptomatic relief.

But honestly, which would you rather choose:

A lifetime of sniffing allergy drugs up your nose or taking allergy pills, which can only provide temporary symptomatic relief?

Or, a few simple sprays of safe, natural colloidal silver up the nose once or twice a week whenever allergy symptoms show up?

I’ll have to leave the answer to that question up to you.

In the meantime, if you’d like to learn more about safe, natural colloidal silver and its usage, just click the link…

Yours for the safe, sane and responsible use of colloidal silver,

Nutrition: "Folic Acid May Help Treat Asthma, Allergies"

“Folic acid, or vitamin B9, essential for red blood cell health and long known to reduce the risk of spinal birth defects, may also suppress allergic reactions and lessen the severity of allergy and asthma symptoms, according to new research from the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

In what is believed to be the first study in humans examining the link between blood levels of folate – the naturally occurring form of folic acid — and allergies, the Hopkins scientists say results add to mounting evidence that folate can help regulate inflammation. Recent studies, including research from Hopkins, have found a link between folate levels and inflammation-mediated diseases, including heart disease. A report on the Hopkins Children’s findings appears online ahead of print in the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology. Cautioning that it’s far too soon to recommend folic acid supplements to prevent or treat people with asthma and allergies, the researchers emphasize that more research needs to be done to confirm their results, and to establish safe doses and risks.

Reviewing the medical records of more than 8,000 people ages 2 to 85 the investigators tracked the effect of folate levels on respiratory and allergic symptoms and on levels of IgE antibodies, immune system markers that rise in response to an allergen. People with higher blood levels of folate had fewer IgE antibodies, fewer reported allergies, less wheezing and lower likelihood of asthma, researchers report. “Our findings are a clear indication that folic acid may indeed help regulate immune response to allergens, and may reduce allergy and asthma symptoms,” says lead investigator Elizabeth Matsui, M.D. M.H.S., pediatric allergist at Hopkins Children’s. “But we still need to figure out the exact mechanism behind it, and to do so we need studies that follow people receiving treatment with folic acid, before we even consider supplementation with folic acid to treat or prevent allergies and asthma.”

The current recommendation for daily dietary intake of folic acid is 400 micrograms for healthy men and non-pregnant women. Many cereals and grain products are already fortified with folate, and folate is found naturally in green, leafy vegetables, beans and nuts. Other findings of the study:
• People with the lowest folate levels (below 8 nanograms per milliliter) had 40 percent higher risk of wheezing than people with the highest folate levels (above 18 ng/ml).
• People with the lowest folate levels had a 30 percent higher risk than those with the highest folate levels of having elevated IgE antibodies, markers of allergy predisposition.
• Those with the lowest folate levels had 31 percent higher risk of atopy (allergic symptoms) than people with the highest folate levels.
• Those with lowest folate levels had 16 percent higher risk of having asthma than people with the highest folate levels.
• Blacks and Hispanics had lower blood folate levels — 12 and 12.5 nanograms per milliliter, respectively — than whites (15 ng/ml), but the differences were not due to income and socio-economic status.

The Hopkins team is planning a study comparing the effects of folic acid and placebo in people with allergies and asthma. Asthma affects more than 7 percent of adults and children in the United States, and is the most common chronic condition among children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Environmental allergies are estimated to affect 25 million Americans, according to the CDC. Co-investigator on the study: William Matsui, M.D, of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health.”

Are Allergies and Asthma Interlinked

Around 25% of the human beings develop some sort of allergy at a certain point in their lives. When the body exhibits an abnormal reaction to a certain substance or substances then that is known as allergy. Bee stings, pet hair and dust mites are all different types of allergies. On the other hand, asthma is an entirely separate condition from allergy but they are, in fact, related. People who suffer from allergies of nose and eyes are likely to be affected by asthma also. But the fact is that not all cases of allergies can be linked to asthma and vice versa. However, if a person is suffering from asthma then his/her condition may get worse if exposed to specific things that can cause reactions which are also known as allergens.

Asthma and allergy in winter

Though many people look forward to the winter months as the weather is better, people with asthma and/or allergy may experience a miserable time during the winter months. Let us find out why this happens.

The cold can trigger serious conditions in almost 90% of the people suffering from such a disease. This means that people who have the disease can find the winter months hard to handle. In fact one may across people (with asthma) who have wheezing during winter. It may help to cover your nose and mouth when you are going outside. The flu is a severe form of cold so a person who is allergic to cold can have trigger symptoms which can become worse as the cold intensifies. So, in general, a condition of allergic asthma sets in when a person inhales a trigger.

Identifying and avoiding asthma triggers

There are many asthma triggers which you will come across in everyday life. Unfortunately a majority of them are found indoors and are easily avoidable. Many people feel that they develop a condition as they are highly allergic to dust. Though this theory is not entirely wrong, it must be mentioned that asthma is likely to be triggered more by dust mites than the dust itself. The dust mites are little insects that are found mainly in upholstered furniture, mattresses and pillows. The droppings of these insects are considered as allergens that trigger allergies and make asthma worse.

The second most common trigger is molds which are fungi that thrive on moist surfaces. The molds actually produce very tiny spores that can travel through and if you happened to inhale this spore then an attack is imminent. The homes which have water damage and high humidity are breeding grounds for molds.

Cockroaches are found throughout the southern US and these can be very difficult to avoid. The most asthma triggers are cockroach saliva and their droppings. You just cannot terminate these pests totally, it is better to avoid them.

As we discussed earlier not all asthma attacks are triggered by allergies but since allergic asthma is not uncommon, it is better to avoid it as much as you can.

Allergies in Cats -- Wheezing

What a prolonged case of wheezing in a cat.

I’ve been praying that it’s nothing more than a case of allergies in cats – or, in this particular case, allergies in Mittens.

Why not? After all, allergies are the most common cause of wheezing in cats.

Mittens, an affectionate if skittish, part-Siamese cat, has been wheezing for months on end. We still don’t know what’s causing her persistent wheezing.

Pixie, Mittens’ reluctant guardian (she acquired the cat willy-nilly), finally took her to the vet after weeks of foot dragging. (I hasten to add that Pixie is going through a turbulent time in her life, which has made it difficult for her to attend to things she normally would’ve managed easily.)

Wheezing in cats means there may be congestion in the lungs or sinuses. Congestion can be brought on by allergies or infection caused by bacteria, virus, or fungus. Another possibility is heart disease.

Mittens blood work was normal. Cat flu and pneumonia were ruled out. The vet told us that her chest x-ray showed an enlargement of the heart and “increased activities” in the area. Perhaps she had a tumor?

Based on her chest X-ray though, the radiologist thought that Mittens might have allergies. He gave her a cortisone shot, which immediately stopped the wheezing – for one day only, alas. Now, she’s back to wheezing. She sounds like she has a very, very stuffed up nose. Sometimes her breathing sounds completely normal; other times it’s quite labored, a gasping, high-pitched wheeze. Doesn’t appear to be any foreign object lodged in the nasal passageway.

The odd thing is that she has a healthy appetite and what appears to be a normal amount of energy. She has no nasal discharges, often a sign of respiratory infection. Except for the wheezing (which sometimes gets so bad that it interferes with my sleep, although apparently, not her sleep), she looks and behaves no different than when she was perfectly healthy.

Could it be asthma? It’s supposed to be one of the most common causes of wheezing in cats, and much more of a problem for cats than dogs. Asthma can be triggered by allergies. The wheezing sounds just like a person having an asthma attack.

Other causes of respiratory problems like wheezing in cats include:

Hairballs – Cats swallow fur when they groom themselves, and they sometimes cough and gag up hairballs. It’s not a problem usually, but if they look like they’re choking, take them to the vet immediately! An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of fur, as they say. Regular brushing can prevent the build up of hairballs.

Heartworms – Surprisingly, these parasites, which live inside the pulmonary (lung) arteries and the right side of the heart, can cause shortness of breath and coughing. Heartworms can be a serious condition leading to high blood pressure or heart failure. Preventing these nasty worms from growing inside your cat is your best line of defense because the drugs to combat these worms can cause side effects that can be quite dangerous to kitty.

Heatstroke – It’s easy for cats to get overheated if you leave them in a hot environment where they can’t escape or cool off. Cats can’t sweat like we do, so their international temperatures can quickly rise. The cat will start panting. If you can’t get the body temperature down quickly, the cat can collapse and even die.

In Mittens’ case, hairballs, heartworms, and heatstroke, have all been ruled out. So what is the cause of her wheezing? The vet didn’t seem to know.

Pixie suspects that Mittens has a tumor. If so, she would need surgery. And at 15 years of age, Pixie believes that Mittens is too old to benefit from surgical intervention.

I pray that the wheezing is nothing but allergies.

Is Claritin a Good Antihistamine for Allergies?

Answer: In short, yes. Claritin (loratadine) is a second-generation oral antihistamine approved for the treatment of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and urticaria (hives) for adults and children 2 years and older. Claritin is available over the counter without a prescription and in multiple generic forms, and comes in tablet and liquid forms, and as oral disintegrating tablets. The dosage of Claritin is 5 milligrams for children 2 to 6 years of age, and 10 milligrams for 6 years of age and older. Higher dosages have not been shown to be more effective for the treatment of hay fever, although may be more effective for the treatment of hives.

Claritin, like other antihistamines, begins to work within a few hours of taking the medication. For this reason, taking Claritin only on an as-needed basis can be effective for the treatment of hay fever and hives, although taking Claritin daily may result in better overall control of symptoms. While Claritin is effective, other antihistamines, such as Zyrtec (cetirizine) and Allegra (fexofenadine) work better, faster and last longer than Claritin for the treatment of hay fever and hives.

Claritin is generally well tolerated with a low occurrence of side effects. The most common side effects include headache, sedation, fatigue and dry mouth. Sedation is reported to occur in 8% of people taking Claritin, and 6% of people taking placebo in the same study. The rates of the other common side effects of Claritin occur at about the same rate as they do with placebo, meaning that these are not considered to be significant side effects. Claritin has a pregnancy category ‘B’ rating, meaning that it is generally considered to be safe for pregnant women.
