Cat behavior training

Learning cat behaviors before you start training them would be an good idea for anyone that is going to train a cat’s behavior.

A cat can jump and lands on its feet as this are a natural instinct for a cat. When a kitten is first born, the cushion in a kittens paws are not developed with the cushion to land on its feet. It takes about 7 wk to develop the cushion in a cats paw for landing. A cats bone structure is unique to other animals as the bones are flexible , cat has no collar bone, which enables them to be able to twist and bend their bones A cat can jump from short distant with out sustaining any injuries.

With this behavior, you will want to teach the cat to jump hoops, sticks, or off the scratching tree. Letting a cat jump from extreme heights will cause injury to the cat.

Cats have a unique hearing ability; they are able to hear high tones and pitches, like opening a door or a can of food. Cats also have unique smelling abilities. The reason a cat will scratch or urinate on the floor , rub its self up against a door or furniture, is the cat is  leaving their scent in that areas so they will be able to come back and know they were there, in other words marking its territory. In addition, if another cat or animal comes along in the area a cat will know this. Cats can also smell with their mouths. There is a gland call 'Jacobson's organ’, it is a sac in the cats upper mouth filled with blood, as the cat smells the scent and the slightly opens their mouth and upper lip, this allows the scent to be carried in and to the sac, which it will carry the scent goes to the cat brain. This mostly happen to male cats when a female has urinated.

With these natural instincts and behaviors this can give you some insight to help you train you cat. With behavior training you will want to make sure that you allow your cat the ability in some way to play out it natural instincts and behaviors.

When training a cat for behaviors here are some things that you need to look at and take in consideration when training. Aggression especially in older cats, this can be cause from illness, other cats in the home. This you may want to contact your vet to have the cat check out to see if it is all right at this time to train a cat.

Depression and anxiety could play another part with trying to train your cat. If a cat is separated by it recent owner the cat can become depressed. Stress on a cat can be common effect on a cat. If you think that your cat has depression or high anxiety, this would be a good time to take the cat to the vet. Vets can talk to you about some of the things that may be causing this and a help list to help the cat. There are medications that a vet can prescribe for the cat to help with depression and anxiety.

Never hit a cat for a punishment the cat will learn to fear you, and fearing will be a behavior you will not be able to control or retrain. When they do something that is not right. Ignore the problem or if you catch them right a way you can associate a noise with that behavior on what you do not like or just in a stern voice tell them “NO”.

If a behavior is becoming impossible you may have to resort to the baby proof home, all containers that have food in them have a lid on it. Make sure that the counters are clean and have nothing that a cat would want to play with.

The day that you get your cat or kitten, you will want to start training at this point. This will keep many unwanted behaviors away, and hopefully not let any new behaviors to start.

Healthy cats need healthy relationships with their owner.

6 Must Know Tips Before Getting A Kitten

Getting a kitten can be one of the most wonderful experiences in a person's life. For anyone wishing to bring home a kitten for the first time, there are lots of important points that have to be noted by the members of his or her household. Since it is a huge step to bring a pet home, it is always a good idea to make sure that you can take proper care of it and are prepared to invest time in mingling with the new pet to know about its behavior, likes and dislikes, and don't mind spending time in training it.
Before getting a kitten, the members of your household should make sure that their house has been made suitable for the cat. All dangerous items such as pesticides, insect killing sprays, and sharp items should be moved out of the range of the kitten. A kitten is just like an infant baby, unaware of the items inside a home that can prove to be dangerous for its health.
To prepare for your new pet and in order to make her feel comfortable, a few treats such as cat condos, cat food, and a cat carrier should be purchased before the kitten is brought home.
One vital tip that potential kitten owners have to keep in their mind is that their feeding dish should always be kept clean. If you notice that your kitty is not consuming her food that was kept in the dish, the food should immediately be disposed off and the dish be cleaned properly.
Kittens often love to sleep on carpets as it gives them a warm and soft feeling. For this reason, they should be kept as clean as possible and vacuumed regularly so that parasites do not trouble your delicate new friend.
Cleaning the litter tray of kittens is equally important and should be done on a regular basis. If their litter tray is not cleaned regularly, kittens would usually get into the habit of making other corners of your home dirty. Try sprinkling baking soda on the tray to avoid bad smells coming from it.
Before getting a kitten, it is always advisable that her new owners are aware of the type of food that kittens usually consume. If your kitty is exposed to food of new brands, there is a chance that her delicate stomach may get into trouble.
Bringing home a new pet is a great responsibility and we hope that you will bear these tips in mind before getting a kitten.

Basics of Cat Training

If you are planning on getting a kitten or are already a cat owner, one of your first priorities should be to train your pet. Training a kitten would naturally be easier than training an adult cat so it would be best if you could start as early as possible.
While cats cannot be trained in the manner adopted by dogs, they can be trained to develop good habits. Effective cat training almost always includes discouraging bad habits while encouraging new ones, in order to avoid potential cat behavior problems in the future. In order to achieve this, it is important to maintain a fine balance while training your pet.
The following article lists some basic cat training pointers that should be kept in mind.
Rules for Cat Training
The most important thing that you have to ensure that your training sessions are full of love and that you never overdo it. Traumatic training sessions could lead to cat behavior problems and of course, aborted trainings. Therefore, make sure that you maintain the trust and bond between your cat and yourself throughout your training sessions.
Certain aspects of training are essential to overcome cat health problems and unless your training falls under that category, never force your cat to do something that he or she does not want to do. Starting at a young age will help accelerate learning. Moreover, the use of rewards such as cat treats is always a good idea for successful training.
Other Important Aspects of Cat Training
Unlike dogs, cats are not naturally trained and thus do not respond to the usual reward and punishment routine in the expected manner. It is for this reason that cat training requires more patience than any other training. Punishing your cat for bad behavior will actually worsen the situation than actually teach the cat. Therefore, it is never a good idea to punish your cat even if you are frustrated that she is not progressing well.
You should always try to control the environment in which you want your cat to learn. Finally, try to make the experience of unwanted behavior something that your cat will not want to repeat, as this will help the cat avoid it in the future.
Other than training a kitten, it is also important to ensure that your pet does not suffer from any cat health problems by taking her to regular checkups at the vet.

Is Cat Dander Giving You The Sniffles? Prevent This Problem With These Easy Tips

Cat allergies are a common problem for millions of people around the world. While for some, it is restricted to sniffles and the occasional headaches, it is often more severe for others. Cat dander is airborne and can be carried quite far from its source. So, even if someone does not own a cat, a reaction may be triggered if there are other cats in the vicinity. Dander sticks to everything, which means that getting rid of cat dander can be quite a task
The allergic reaction to cat dander is triggered by a glycoprotein Fel D 1 which is secreted by a cat's sebaceous glands, saliva and is present in little amounts in its urine. This Fel D 1 is also present on the microscopic bits of skin that is attached at the end of cat fur. To prevent allergies, you have to make sure that your house is free of cat fur, saliva and cat urine.
You can reduce the allergens by washing all the walls and ceiling with hot soapy water. This is recommended before you even move into a house in case the previous owner or any neighbor has cats. If necessary, get the house painted. Vacuum the house with a HEPA filter fitted vacuum cleaner, especially the crevices such as windowsills, drapes and baseboards as these are places where dander tends to get trapped. Carpets are especially susceptible to dander and should be steam vacuumed regularly and cleaned periodically by professionals. The same should be done with upholstery. If possible, use vinyl or leather covers for furniture as woven fabrics trap more dander.
Beds can be covered with anti-mite sheets to reduce dander accumulation. The furnace filters should be cleaned every three months. A great way to go about this is by using a cheese cloth as it offers additional filtering. You should always dust with a wet cloth since dry dusting will scatter dander and may aggravate allergies. Since cat urine has traces of Fel D 1, try using a dust-free kitty litter, as well as gloves and a facial mask while cleaning the litter box.
Unfortunately, the struggle to remove cat dander is rarely successful. You can reduce it, but it is nearly impossible to eliminate it completely. However, with proper cleaning, allergies can be successfully kept at bay. It is for this reason that if you are planning on getting a kitten, it is always a good idea to check if any members of your family have a history of allergic reactions to cats.

Cat Condos: Exercise And Fun For Our Feline Friends

Having been rescuing and befriending abandoned cats for over 26 years, I have become very cognizant of the importance of providing and maintaining our furry friends' once active outdoor lifestyles to their new indoor environment. My current three "wonder cats" - Mikko, Panther and Buddy - used to be very active outdoors; some activities were of a "fending one's turf", resulting in the showing of "battle scars"; some were more of a playful nature, i.e. running, chasing and climbing. Deciding to transition my kids to be solely indoor inhabitants was due mostly to their well-being and overall health. Because of this I was concerned about how to maintain their active lifestyles, maintain a healthy body weight, and offer a quality of life which was both fun and relaxing.
After succeeding in coaxing my guys indoors (it took me 2 YEARS to finally get Panther to trust me enough to come indoors, and even then continued to be a "process"!), I wanted to offer them a quality of life where I felt I wasn't depriving them in any way by keeping them indoors, while maintaining their health.
Along with investigating the most optimal nutritional needs for my guys, I wanted them to get the most out of indoor exercising tools. I researched and discovered that cat condos, trees and beds (also known as furniture) offered a specific place for cats to call their own, in addition to providing them with fun, relaxation and most importantly exercise, due to the climbing, jumping, chasing and scratching (most coming with scratching posts) that seem to be common activities.
My two black and white cats - Mikko and Panther - seem to have been developing a very unique and special relationship, playing, "stalking" each other and hanging out together quite frequently during the day and into the night. Although Buddy has a very loving and kind personality, he and Panther tend to continue to be "territorial" around each other, causing them to mostly avoid the other, with occasional "scruffs." And Mikko seems to be the "peace keeper" between the other two.
I totally love watching my three felines in their cat tree. I have found on many occasions I turn the tv (and other "distractions") off, and watch the "kids go at it", they seeming to be totally immersed in their "jungle gym" and with each other. Knowing they are all having fun, and getting their exercise at the same time, makes me one happy dad!
I have my own online business specializing in cat trees, condos and beds, both self-standing and wall mounted. I also have included on my website litter box cabinets with additional drawers, for those humans who prefer a more "hidden look" with cat's "bathrooms" from the standard litter box areas.
If you would like to check out my website, I can be found at http://www.CatCondoFun.com. I have an assortment of high quality hand-built cat condos and trees to choose from, suitable for every budget.
All the best,
Joe Fazio

Toilet Train Cats With These Easy Tips

The process to toilet train cats might be easier than you think. If you are keen to do so, the most important thing to consider during such training is to progress gradually and not be impatient and try to speed up the process. The following article lists some important tips worth following when training a kitten or adult cat to use the toilet.
Steps for Toilet Training
The first thing you need to do before toilet training your cats is to move their litter boxes closer to the toilet. Once this is done, slowly elevate the litter box in such a way that it is parallel to the toilet seat. Make sure that the change is gradual and look out for cat behavior problems while doing so. After your cat is comfortable with the height, try to fit the box into the toilet and fix it. At this stage, make sure that you teach your cat how to sit on the seat with its four paws, so as to avoid any potential accidents. Now all you have to do is to wait until your cat is comfortable with this arrangement before trying and filling it with water gradually. In the meantime, keep cleaning the box to avoid bad odors. Once your cat is used to the box filled with water, you can try to get it to use the toilet directly.
What You Need To Keep In Mind While Toilet Training
When you toilet train cats, make sure that you progress gradually, taking note of all kinds of cat behavior problems that may come up along the way. If your cat stops using the toilet at any point of the training, make sure that you go back a few steps and start again. It is important to note that it is not usual or normal for cats to use human toilets. Moreover, given that accidents can be caused due to the height involved, it is important that you observe all safety measures as an accident could also affect the progress of your training schedule.
You should only attempt to toilet train cats when you are sure of being in the house for a long period of time. Moreover, make sure that your guests and family members are aware that such training is in progress and that they do not place the toilet lid down.
Toilet training cats should be an easy task if you know what you are doing.

The Five Most Common Cat Problems and Their Causes

Living with cats will mean experiencing cat problems in some form at some point. In each case the first thing to look into is the cat's health. Changes in a cat's well-being can often lead to changes in behaviour. Other problems with cats are often a reaction to changes and other things cats perceive to be stressful. Problems with cats are often more pronounced with cats that have been adopted from animal shelters.
Cat problems can have serious causes. Mistreatment may have had adverse effects on a cat's personality. In many cases, to gain such a cat's trust requires extra patience and reassurance. But it's very rewarding in the end.
It's important to be prepared for the kind and amount of effort it can take to gain the friendship of an abused cat. There's nothing worse for a cat than an unprepared person having to return it to the shelter. This not only exposes the cat to extra stress and another instance of rejection, but many shelters put cats down that are difficult to place.
On the other hand it's important to remember that what we consider cat problems may be just natural behaviour patterns. It's a good idea to be familiar with the feline personality to avoid misunderstandings. Trying to override the feline nature will not lead to good results. If someone's situation in life can't accommodate cats' natural behaviour, it's best for everyone's sake not to adopt a cat.
But it is possible to avoid or get a handle on existing cat problems. Some compromise can be achieved with the right training.
The five most common cat problems are:
- avoiding the litter box
- scratching furniture
- aggression/biting/scratching
- being too noisy
- eating/digging up houseplants
After eliminating health problems as a possible cause, you can explore them further as to other possible causes.Interestingly, many cat problems are in some form manmade. Let's look at a few examples.
Many types of cat litter and litter boxes are designed to appeal to the human customer. They might not appeal to cat quite so much. Or the litter box in kept in an awkward place. Cats like them to be as far as possible from their food and water dishes, away from drafts and allow them some privacy. Some cats don't like sharing with others. A new litter box can solve this. Even the most conscientious cat person may be stressed and forget to clean out the box. The cat might just have reacted the way we react to a dirty public toilet, by going somewhere else.
Scratching is also a normal activity. Clipping the claws can minimize the need to scratch. The absence of proper scratching posts may give cats an excuse to take it out on the furniture. To further put off cats, non-toxic scents that they dislike can be applied to the furniture. It can also help one's peace of mind to keep valuable pieces of furniture in a cat free room.
People that complain about cats scratching and biting have often brought this on by themselves. Whether it's playful or serious, it should be discouraged firmly but kindly. Over time cats will come to understand that such behaviour doesn't get them what they want but gets them ignored.
Similar to the previous problems, cats that practice vocal blackmail have trained their human to give in to harassment. Steadily ignoring it is the only way to end it. But it requires patience. The cat should never be punished physically or go without anything it really needs.
Eating grass and other plants is another unpopular but perfectly normal habit. One wouldn't really be happy about one's prize orchids being eaten or chewed. In addition to being unpopular with humans it can be very dangerous. By providing safe grasses (most are safe, but prior research is vital) and keeping dangerous and valuable plants out of a cat's reach, danger and damage can be avoided. Citrus and eucalyptus essential oils can be applied to the soil to discourage digging.
This article illustrates that many cat problems are relatively simple to manage. But in some cases, more elaborate measure are needed. I plan to discuss this in future article.

Cat Pain - You Can Kill Your Cat Using This Common Pain Killer

The last thing a vet wants to tell a cat owner is that the cat's pain treatment killed the cat. Yet, it does happen, even to people who are the most loving cat owners. Here are some tips for recognizing your cat's pain. Before you reach for that bottle of over-the-counter pain medication in your medicine cabinet, consider using natural products that are proven to relieve cat pain.
Cats are notorious for hiding pain. After all, they sleep most of the day and when they wake up they immediately give themselves a good stretching tune-up. As you watch her execute a perfect "down dog" and "half moon" position, you wonder if cats actually invented yoga.
However, now you notice that she is hesitating a bit before she jumps off the couch. When she lands, you note that there is a bit of a limp in her gait. If this is the first time you noticed the limp it may be a temporary cat pain, but with cats over 5, the limp may be a symptom of feline arthritis.
Sadly, some people make the mistake of giving their cat the same medication they take for pain relief. One of these, Tylenol, can kill your cat. Don't be tempted help your cat with people-meds. It is bad medicine.
There is not a clear way to know if your cat is having pain. However, there are some clues:
1. Abnormal sleeping posture
2. Unusual gait
3. Vocalization
4. Persistent licking
5. Unusual litter box behavior
6. Decreased appetite
7. Stops grooming
When a cat is comfortable, you'll notice that she curls up into a ball or even stretches out as if she is flying through the air like Supercat in her dreams. These are signs that your cat is comfortable. However, if you notice your kitty is lying upright with her feet under her body, but to you it seems that she is not relaxing, then she is uptight about something. It could be an external influence, like another cat bothering her, or it may mean that she is fighting discomfort or pain. She isn't comfortable enough to relax and this is apparent in her posture.
Of course, if you cat is limping or yowls when she moves then that's a sure sign of cat pain. However, if you notice that she is persistently licking an area, like her shoulder or toes, then this is a sign that she aches in her cat joints. Your cat doesn't have fingers so she uses her tongue to massage her aches and pains.
The opposite of this is when your cat stops grooming. This is a sure sign that something is wrong. If she is leaving her food bowl full of food and not eating, again another sure sign of a problem.
If your cat's litter box behavior has taken a turn for the worse, this is another sign something is wrong. It can mean that she has a feline urinary infection, but it can also mean that there is another physical problem. Don't immediately assume this is a behavior problem, especially in an older cat. You should suspect a physical problem first. Cats are notoriously clean animals; when they stop grooming or properly using the litter box it's her way of giving you a clear message--get me help!
The good news is that you don't have to immediately turn to drugs to give your cat relief. However, before you start any protocol, talk with your veterinarian. Vets are accustomed to prescribing analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to treat cat pain. Talk to your vet about options that don't involve prescription medications, but are proven to help reduce cat pain.
More vets are open to using homeopathic solutions to help kitties deal with illnesses and pain naturally. One benefit of using natural remedies is that you can use them for long-term treatment of cat pain, like feline arthritis. Osteoarthritis in cats is a progressive disease and your kitty will need long term pain relief. Your vet may sell these products, but you can also find them online from homeopathic resources.
You can find these natural remedies to help give your kitty relief from cat pain. It's easy to give you cat too as it comes in a liquid format that you can mix in her food or water http://ArthritisCatsTreatment.com.

Taking Care Of A Pet Cat

There are some people who prefer to have a pet cat than any other animal. With a cat there is no worry of it destroying all the precious things at home and this does not make a big mess in the house. Cats are preferred by other people because of their playful nature and affectionate behaviour. But having a cat at home still requires a great deal of attention and care from the pet owner. There are certain things that a cat would need that would keep it healthy.
Cats are picky eaters and giving them the right food would help them in their nourishment and health. There are different kinds of cat food in the market and some of these your cat may not be fond of. Getting the food that it likes would ensure that it gets the needed nourishment for it to stay healthy. Some foods have additional ingredients that would help in keeping the cat healthy which is why it is very important to read what the label says about the food. You could also ask your vet on what they would recommend for the type of cat you have. Changing the food often would give its taste buds a variety of flavors keeping it interested in its food.
To keep your cat away from scratching and damaging the corners of your furniture, a scratching pole would be a good idea to have. You can start by putting a piece of fabric that is similar to the furniture that they love to scratch on a piece of wooden pole. They need to keep their claws sharp and exercise their muscles and a separate scratching pole can achieve this without them damaging your furniture.
Some cats prefer to have their own place to sleep in or rest and there are plenty cat litter boxes or baskets that can be found in pet stores, but if you are saving on expenses then an ordinary box can be made into one. Your cat would be equally comfortable as long as you place a cushion or blanket for it to stay in.
Cats still love to be petted even though these don't go near you all the time. Constant attention is what a cat wants and petting them whenever you have the time would make them appreciate you more. They would be more affectionate to you giving you their attention in return.
Having pet health insurance can be very helpful in maintaining the health of your pet. With pet health insurance you would not have to worry about the expenses associated with it.

Six Suggestions to Prevent Cats From Scratching Furniture

Scratching is a fundamental feline activity. There is no way to live with cats and not deal with scratching in some form. The trick is to prevent cats from scratching furniture and redirect their attentions to where it's OK to scratch.
1. The first thing to stop cats scratching furniture is providing at least one scratching post, several would be better. Cats like stretch and scratch after sleeping or after meals. It makes sense for a scratching post to be near the cat's food bowls. Cat trees provide for a number of feline activities at the same time. Cats can scratch and climb them rest on them and even use them as observation posts.
2. It can also help to reduce the cat's need to scratch by keeping the claw tips trimmed. After all one of the reasons cats need to scratch is to get rid of excessively long claw tips.
3. Keeping them entertained is another way to prevent cats from scratching furniture. Boredom and lack of exercise can lead to frustration and silly ideas which is often taken out on the furniture. Actively playing with the cat promotes the bonding process, and the cat gets rid of excess energy. Creating a comfortable spot near a window can provide mental stimulation for when the human is absent.
4. Yet another trick to prevent cats from scratching furniture is to change the texture of the item. Usually cats decide what to scratch based on how it feels under the paws. Taking that away can be very effective. Double-sided tape as well as silver or plastic foils can be used for the purpose. But this method is only recommended with cats the don't chew or even eat non-edible things. Where this is a problem citrus or eucalyptus oils can be applied to the endangered objects. Such oils are non-toxic, but they will keep most cats at a distance. (Tea tree oil must be avoided!)
5. When they're caught in the act, one can stop cats scratching furniture with a direct squirt of water or a shout. But cats are smart. This will not deter them in the human's absence.
6. A new invention, soft vinyl claw caps, can help cat owners in their effort to prevent cats from scratching furniture. Many happy customers testify to the effectiveness of this method. Though it should be considered that a cat's personality can play a role in the success.
Declawing:
Some readers may wonder why declawing surgery isn't listed as a recommended method to prevent cats from scratching furniture. Here is why:
Declawing surgery can't be compared to a manicure because a cat's claws are more than nails are to a human. The surgery itself is major, with a long and painful recovery period, as claws are direct extensions of the bone. Declawing in fact amputates the last joint of a cat's toe.
While recovering form the surgery a cat would have no alternative to the continued use of its injured paws. There would be great danger of blood poisoning from digging in the litter box, not to mention excruciating pain. Cats are very sensitive to pain, just as all their senses are very keen, even though they disguise it as much as possible.
Claws are an important part of a cat's anatomy. Amputation severely changes the paws' conformation. Both that and being without the primary defense mechanism, its claws, would cause a cat to be at a major disadvantage when facing rivals or predators.
It has been reported that a cat's personality changes after being declawed due to the surgically imposed limitations. Sadly not all professionals recognize this further side effect.
This brief overview should adequately illustrate why it is an inhumane choice. Notably, it's also illegal in many countries, and where it isn't many vets refuse to perform it.
A genuine cat lover would not resort to mutilation for the sake of their furniture. Admittedly, valuable antiques should be protected. Or people may just be a lot more house-proud than the author of this article.
Keeping valuable items in cat free rooms and using one or several of the above suggestions will bring the desired result.
If all these solutions are not enough to reassure some people that they can prevent cats from scratching furniture, there are still ways to interact with cats and do them good. Most people have at least some friends with cats. It's very enjoyable to make friends with one's friends' cats. Sponsoring cats with reputable charities is another great way to help felines in need and keep one's furniture safe.

Causes, Symptoms And Treatment For Cat Urinary Tract Infection

One of the more common cat health problems in domestic pets today is urinary tract infection. While cat urinary tract infection is often not a serious problem, it could turn serious if not detected in the early stages. Understanding the causes, symptoms and treatment of this problem will help in avoiding serious repercussions.
Causes of Infection
There are several reasons why cats suffer from urinary tract infection. The most common amongst them is the diet, especially when it is high in magnesium as the same could cause kidney stones in cats. Kidney stones are another popular reason for cats contracting this disease. Unclean litter boxes can also lead to cat urinary tract infection while maintaining clean ones will reduce the risk.
Stress is another common factor that leads to urinary tract infection in cats. Many causes of stress are due to changes in the environment or diet. Moreover, it is interesting to note that cat urinary tract infection is more common in male cats than female ones. However this does not mean that it does not occur in females. Age is another factor for this condition and cat owners are advised to check for feline kidney disease regularly after their pets turn 7 years or older.
Symptoms of Infection
Common symptoms of cat urinary tract infection include urinating in all places outside the litter box, especially in bath tubs, sinks, tiled floors etc. Cats with such infection tend to urinate in the oddest of places. Secondly, pain or strain while urinating is another common symptom along with smelly and sometimes bloody urine. Excessive thirst combined with excessive urination is also a common symptom of feline kidney disease. Inactivity and excessive itching of the bladder area by the cats is another symptom of this ailment.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Proper diagnosis is essential for treatment of any cat health problem. In this case, your kitty's urine should be tested properly to rule out other problems and isolating UTI. Treatment for UTI includes a primary course of antibiotics, which may be followed by a change in diet.
We hope this article helps in your understanding of the symptoms and reasons for cat urinary tract infection and helps you in treating it effectively. It is also important to understand that cats usually have a high tolerance for pain and do not usually exhibit any symptoms. If you are unsure if you pet has contracted this disease, you might want to bring her to the vet immediately.

Understanding Cat Spraying

If you have ever owned cats, then the problem of cat spraying is probably not new to you. Spraying in cats is so common that it is not possible to attribute it to cat behavior problems at all times. While normally domesticated felines do not really spray, they could do so under stress or when present in a multi cat situation and sometimes for no fathomable reason. This article describes the reasons for cat spraying and some of the things that we can do to deter this behavior.
Understanding Spraying
Spraying is the act of depositing urine in small amounts on vertical surfaces such as walls, blinds, curtains etc, especially when at home. It is important to understand that cat spraying is not a litter box problem but akin to leaving a message for others. Cats spray to mark their territory, especially in the wild or to convey their readiness for mating. It is important to note that spraying is not restricted to male cats but is seen in all cats, neutered or un-neutered.
Reasons for Spraying
While the most common cause for cat spraying is territorial marking, it is not the only reason. Cat urinary tract infection could also cause cats to spray along with overcrowding and an increase in stress. Females usually spray when feeling excessively stressed. Therefore, the best way to tackle this problem is by finding the cause of spraying and working on a solution for it. Female cats in heat are also known to spray, as a means of leaving their scent. Cat personalities also influence spraying as this behavior is common in dominant or submissive cats, especially during times when they are feeling insecure.
Tackling Spraying
Cleaning the areas where they have previously sprayed will help deter a re-occurrence in the future as they tend to spray when they smell their scent. However, this is not adequate. Pet owners should try to understand the psychological problems of their cat, which in turn should be tackled to overcome this behavior. Separating cats in multi cat households, and ensuring a clean and stress free atmosphere are some of the possible ways of tackling this problem.
If medical reasons are cause of cat spraying, then make sure that you have regular checkups with your vet to deal with the problem.
