Why Do Cats Love Cardboard Boxes?

views the best pictures

Any shape or size, they want in...
If you have a cat there is a good chance that if you have ever left a cardboard box on the floor while they have been around, the moment your back was turned, they were inside or at least trying to get inside. It is like some unwritten (because they have no thumbs) cat law that if you see a box, you have to get inside at all cost.
This strange cat phenomenon is universal too as videos of cats from around the world are seen daily on certain websites showing all shapes and sizes jumping into, creeping out of, chewing wildly and sneakily approaching all kinds of cardboard boxes and trying like a safe cracker to get inside.
Reminds them of when they were born
One of the very best explanations is that chances are, your cat was born and spent their first few weeks of life in a cardboard box. This means that whenever they see a cardboard box or smell cardboard for the rest of their life they will automatically associate it with their mother, their siblings and a feeling of comfort and the joy of playing with their brothers and sisters.
Cool and dark
Cats love cool dark places (no not a jazz club). They love places where they can feel safe and secure where no one can see or get to them without their say so. Cardboard boxes offer a kind of false security but to a cat they may look like a secret cave they can hide in. You may have noticed them clambering into cupboards or sleeping under blankets on your bed, this is all part of the same thing as they seek out locations where they are hidden and in the dark.
Spreading scent
A new cardboard box is also like a fresh scent canvas for your cat to paint his own smell on. You will have noticed him rubbing his face on every single surface in the home. This is because the glands on his cheek is where he gets his personal scent from and when he meets a new place (the box) in your home he will immediately want to get his smell on it. Archive boxes, removal boxes, any house moving boxes...doesn't matter to him, he just wants to get it smelling like him.
Fun
They may just see it as an opportunity to have fun. Perhaps still linked to having fun with their siblings when they were born, a box is a curiosity with holes and dark places, great fun for hiding and jumping out on people as well as pretending to hunt.
