How to Protect Your Cat From Upper Respiratory Disease

views the best pictures

Feline upper respiratory disease usually occurs in animal shelters or anywhere a lot of cats are confined. My adopted kittens where very sick with this condition for several weeks. They had runny eyes and noses, sneezed a lot and had diarrhea. They had to go to a vet several times and take antibiotics to get rid of it.
Bacteria and viruses are the culprits for upper respiratory disease in cats, viruses like Feline herpes 1 or infections from reovirus, chlamydia and other viruses. Often cats with weakened immune systems from other illnesses like feline leukemia will often have recurrent upper respiratory infections.
Most times cats will recover on their own without medicines. But, to be on the safe side it is always a wise choice to visit your veterinarian and make sure the illness isn't something else more serious. He or she can run tests to determine if your cat has immunity, or not, from this or any other diseases.
Can you give cats supplements to help their immune system? Yes you can. Cats get stressed very easily and can be prone to illness if their immune system is not up to par. Moving, a new child or person living in the home, sensing a problem within the family can all cause stress. Sometimes even moving a piece of furniture can stress them. Giving your cat a supplement will strengthen their immune system along with a healthy diet. A cat's diet should consist mainly of meat, raw if possible; no dried food. Canned is best, but if possible work up to raw. Over processed pet food has created a rise in pet illness in the last couple of decades. Things like diabetes, respiratory disease and leukemia, once rare are quite common today. Cat supplements, like herbal naturopathic remedies contain the ingredients that they would normally eat in the wild to get well. Herbs like echinacea, milk thistle and astralagus to name a few are now available in formulas for your kitties.
Your cats also need plenty of fresh water for the health of their urinary tract, kidneys and in general. Many cats do not like tap water; try distilled or you can buy an inexpensive tap filter. Cats are hunters and love exercise and play, so even if your schedule is limited give your cats 10 minutes per day of your time. Love and exercise also strengthens their immune system and yours!
