Characteristics of Dogs or Cats

Traditionally, pet owners will often classify themselves as being either "dog people" or "cat people".
Dogs and cats are the two most common types of domestic pet and they are extremely different in terms of what they bring to your life and they type of care that they require. Dog people and cat people can get very defensive and will constantly argue that their pet is the best companion and better animal. The truth of the matter is that there is little point even discussing whether dogs are superior pets to cats or vice versa. All that we can do is discuss the general characteristics of each animal and then think about which is most compatible with a particular person.
Characteristics of Dogs
It is undeniable that dogs hold a special place in human history. They are believed to be the first of the domestic animals and dogs and humans have helped each other to develop into the modern world. This has fostered a very strong bond that continues to be strongly evident.
Cave paintings from the earliest days of human civilization demonstrate that dogs were a part of the community even at this stage. From these early days, humans realized that dogs could be of assistance by guarding the camp, guarding the flocks and helping to hunt. At the same time, the dogs were learning that if they stayed close to the humans they would get the benefits of protection and food. This mutually beneficial relationship was the beginning of the strong bond between humans and dogs.
Since those early days, the practical uses that we have found for dogs expanded. They now assist us in many different ways including transport (pulling sled), mountain rescue, drug control and border protection and assisting vision or hearing impaired people. Despite all these practical purposes, the most common reason that people own a dog is simply for companionship.
Dogs typically love the company of humans and will always want to be around people. This can be of great comfort to people who are feeling isolated or alone in the world. Dogs are also very playful and energetic. They love to be taken on walks and can be trained to play games such as fetch. This can be great exercise and a good way to get people outdoors. People can develop very strong bonds with their dogs because dogs are so dependent and loyal to their owners. This gives us a feeling of reassurance that is sometimes hard to come by in the modern world.
Characteristics of Cats
Cat owners will generally describe their pet as being more independent, dignified, intelligent and resourceful than a dog. Cats don't seem to be as dependent on humans for affection and attention. The relationship with a cat is more on their terms - if they don't feel like being cuddled or patted at a particular time then it's not going to happen!
Cats were particularly revered in ancient Egyptian society where they were worshiped and even buried in elaborate tombs. The Sphynx in Egypt is one example of the love and respect that this society had for cats.
The main way that cats have benefited human society is related to their hunting skills. Cats are natural predators and they have been used to control rat, mice and bird populations to benefit human life. Cats are very intelligent and have been known to learn how to use human devices such as doors and toilets.
The primary benefits of keeping a cat as a pet are that they are generally much easier to look after than a dog. They don't really need a lot of space, they are very clean and they are much less destructive than a dog. They don't require exercise and they will provide quiet and calm companionship. They have strong personalities and command the respect of everyone around them.
