"Friends for Life" is a strong pick for youth readers who enjoy a dog-driven tale."- The Midwest Book Review

"Friends for Life may be a children/teen book but any true dog lover will fall in love with Rico and Bo and their mentor Tank. The book formed pictures in my mind of the dogs as they grew and lived their lives. I could hear the doggy voices just from the words Billi used to describe the dogs. The story is a glove on a cold day..sun after the rain...a soft pillow after work. It made me smile and laugh and cry. I am 49 and am an avid book reader. This is one i will never forget . All my dogs (3 of whom are at Rainbow Bridge) have always and will always be my Friend gor Life. So happy i found this book. I hope to meet Rico and Bo again...maybe on a playdate with Tank."- Amazon Reviewer

Pet Health Tip #22- Hairballs

One of the most common issues that cat owners face is the issue of hairballs.  Hairballs are caused by the cat swallowing hair when it grooms itself.  Most of the hair is digested and passed through the intestinal tract.  If the hair isn’t digested completely, it sits in the stomach and aggregates into a hairball.  Young kittens don’t typically have hairball issues for two reasons.  First, they don’t lose much hair when they groom.  Therefore, they don’t swallow much hair.  Second, their digestive tract is better able to break down the hair is swallowed and pass it through.  As cats age, they tend to shed more hair; thus causing them to swallow more hair.  Also, they are not able to break the hair down as efficiently.  As a consequence, the hair sits in the stomach and aggregates into a hairball.  The hairball irritates the stomach causing the cat to retch.  Typically, the cat is able to successfully rid itself of the hairball.

Hairballs are a normal part of a cat’s life.  They don’t usually cause many problems other than to the owner who has to clean up the mess.  However, on rare occasions, a hairball will sit in a cat’s stomach and harden.  This can cause blockage and can become life-threatening.  Again, this is a rare occurrence, but one to be aware of if you have a geriatric cat that retches repeatedly, but does not bring up a hairball.

So, what can you do about hairballs?  There are some hairball remedy products available that will aid the cat in digesting the hairballs.  They work well and I recommend using them for geriatric cats who have reoccurring issues with hairballs.

Things That You Will Learn When You Own A Cat

When people think of a family pet, the first thing they think of is a dog. It is no surprise, as dogs can make great companions and they can even help owners with special needs. What may come as a surprise is that cats are in fact the most popular option as pets in the country. There are many advantages to owning cats; they take a lot less work in your part to care for them. They are seen as more independent etc. Even when some people will take them out for a walk here and there, all they really need is a litter box to take care of their business. There are still a few things that you will learn when you own a cat.

They Need You... A Lot

Even though cats have a reputation for being independent, they still need you a lot. When you own a cat you understand the concept because your cat will like to be close to you a lot of the time. While in a lot of cases they do not act as excited to see you when you come home, the fact is that not having you for extended periods of time can be very stressing to a cat. They do not only need you for food, they also need companionship, and unless you are there all the time or get a second cat they can be very bored and lonely.

They Need Exercise

A cat that is lonely the entire day can get bored, and a bored cat can easily get into trouble. If the cat has no one to interact with then it will have two options: It will get fat and sick and lead a boring life, or it can entertain itself by destroying some of the wires around the house. That can be dangerous to the cat if the wire conducts electricity. Your plants will also be fair game and so will be your carpet. Giving your cat a fair amount of exercise in the way of interactive toys can help you save your furniture, wires and even the cat's life. If you own a cat, then you already know where the toys are available; but if you are new to cats then you should head to your local pet store.

They Are Not Dogs

A pet owner may feel that they know what to expect when they own a cat because they had another type of pet in the past. This is actually not the case. Cats are very different from dogs and a new cat owner would do well to do some reading before ever going through the adoption process. Cat education is a lot different than dog education. The games that they like to play are different and the way you will need to cat-proof your home is not even close to what you would have to do when you adopt a puppy. That said, cats can be great companions to people and you will have a long loving relationship with them.

PET HEALTH TIP #21- Ear Mites

Ear mites affect both dogs and cats.  However, the most common victim of ear mite infestations are kittens.  Ear mites are microscopic creatures.  Under the microscope, they resemble a tick.  These little creatures will set up residence inside the kitten’s ear canal.  The mites crawl around inside the ear causing the kitten constant irritation.  The most common symptom the kitten will show is constant scratching and digging at its ears.  The kittens will also shake their heads a lot.  Ear mites feed on the dead skin, so they don’t cause damage to the ear.  However, due to the constant scratching, the kitten can cause damage.  So, you can see inflammation in the ears as well.  The other most common symptom is a black debris build-up that has a gritty quality.  It has a consistency similar to sand.  This build-up is essentially mite waste.

Ear mites do not infest humans.  However, as I said, they will infest both dogs and cats.  It is common to have more than one animal in the household affected.  The treatment is simple and involves thoroughly cleaning the ears and applying medication.  It is important to consult your veterinarian for treatment.

Cat behavior training

Learning cat behaviors before you start training them would be an good idea for anyone that is going to train a cat’s behavior.

A cat can jump and lands on its feet as this are a natural instinct for a cat. When a kitten is first born, the cushion in a kittens paws are not developed with the cushion to land on its feet. It takes about 7 wk to develop the cushion in a cats paw for landing. A cats bone structure is unique to other animals as the bones are flexible , cat has no collar bone, which enables them to be able to twist and bend their bones A cat can jump from short distant with out sustaining any injuries.

With this behavior, you will want to teach the cat to jump hoops, sticks, or off the scratching tree. Letting a cat jump from extreme heights will cause injury to the cat.

Cats have a unique hearing ability; they are able to hear high tones and pitches, like opening a door or a can of food. Cats also have unique smelling abilities. The reason a cat will scratch or urinate on the floor , rub its self up against a door or furniture, is the cat is  leaving their scent in that areas so they will be able to come back and know they were there, in other words marking its territory. In addition, if another cat or animal comes along in the area a cat will know this. Cats can also smell with their mouths. There is a gland call 'Jacobson's organ’, it is a sac in the cats upper mouth filled with blood, as the cat smells the scent and the slightly opens their mouth and upper lip, this allows the scent to be carried in and to the sac, which it will carry the scent goes to the cat brain. This mostly happen to male cats when a female has urinated.

With these natural instincts and behaviors this can give you some insight to help you train you cat. With behavior training you will want to make sure that you allow your cat the ability in some way to play out it natural instincts and behaviors.

When training a cat for behaviors here are some things that you need to look at and take in consideration when training. Aggression especially in older cats, this can be cause from illness, other cats in the home. This you may want to contact your vet to have the cat check out to see if it is all right at this time to train a cat.

Depression and anxiety could play another part with trying to train your cat. If a cat is separated by it recent owner the cat can become depressed. Stress on a cat can be common effect on a cat. If you think that your cat has depression or high anxiety, this would be a good time to take the cat to the vet. Vets can talk to you about some of the things that may be causing this and a help list to help the cat. There are medications that a vet can prescribe for the cat to help with depression and anxiety.

Never hit a cat for a punishment the cat will learn to fear you, and fearing will be a behavior you will not be able to control or retrain. When they do something that is not right. Ignore the problem or if you catch them right a way you can associate a noise with that behavior on what you do not like or just in a stern voice tell them “NO”.

If a behavior is becoming impossible you may have to resort to the baby proof home, all containers that have food in them have a lid on it. Make sure that the counters are clean and have nothing that a cat would want to play with.

The day that you get your cat or kitten, you will want to start training at this point. This will keep many unwanted behaviors away, and hopefully not let any new behaviors to start.

Healthy cats need healthy relationships with their owner.

Interesting Facts About Cats You Probably Didn't Know

Interesting Facts About Cat Claws

It's impossible for a cat to climb down a tree head first because their claws are curved only one way. To get down, they must back down (or get a nice fireman to rescue them.)

All cats have claws; all cats, with the exception of the cheetah, sheath their claws when at rest. A cat's back claws are not as sharp as their front claws, because the back ones do not retract, and therefore become worn.

Marking their Territory

You probably feel pretty special when fluffy rubs up against your legs; she's not only showing affection, she's marking you as her territory. Do you ever wonder why as soon as you change the litter box, your cat goes in to use it? You guessed it - she's marking her territory. No matter how many times you change the litter box, your cat will go in right after to make it hers. This means you'll be buying a lot of cat litter!

Why Do Cats Purr?

To this day, experts are unsure of why cats purr. Most believe that the purring is caused by vibrating vocal chords deep in the throat. In order to purr, one of the larynx muscles open and closes the air passage as much as 25 times a second. Cats mostly purr when they are happy and content, but they can also purr when they are nervous.

How they Spend Their Day

Cats spend about 18 hours a day sleeping. When kittens sleep, a growth hormone is released.Another third of their day is spent cleaning and grooming themselves. That doesn't leave much time for play, but they do manage to get some free time in!

The Richest Cat in the World

The richest cat is named Blackie, who was left 15 million pounds by his owner, Ben Rea. This just shows how much Ben loved his pet, with that amount of money this cat is definitely spoiled for choice when it comes to cat food.

How to Tell if a Cat Feels Content

When a cat is on her back, paws in the air, you know she feels safe and content (although this is not an invitation to give her a belly rub!) They will usually curl up in one of their favorite spots in the house to fall asleep; don't be surprised if one of their favorite spots is your bed.

Cats love to be pampered, but they also enjoy their time alone. They will let you know when they want attention. In the meantime, they'll be expecting the best toys and treats that money can buy - so be on the lookout for money savers like Tidy Cats coupons.
